The Linux desktop is changing, the underlying aging X11 technology is
being replaced by Wayland, and this will have an important yet not
well understood impact on the professional artist workstations which
many studios rely on.
In conjunction with the Visual Effects Society’s Technology Committee,
the Academy Software Foundation is launching a Working Group to
provide a neutral forum where stakeholders can collaborate to
understand the transition and plan a path forward. This includes areas
such as graphics tablet support, window management, input focus, key
bindings, desktop customization, remote access solutions, GPU
acceleration, color management, High Dynamic Range displays, and
compatibility with commercial, open source, and in-house applications.
We invite anyone interested in or involved with graphics workstations
for VFX and animation to join the conversation.
We are starting a monthly meeting series on Tuesday, May 19th 2026 at
13:00-14:00 Pacific Time. The first meeting will be an informal
introduction and planning session, where we will begin shaping the
scope of the group based on the expertise and interests of
participants. If you are interested in joining us, please register for
the meeting on the ASWF calendar at:
https://www.aswf.io/meeting-calendar/
We also have the #wg-wayland channel on the ASWF Slack instance, which
will be the primary communication method between meetings:

Feel free to share this with anyone who should be part of the
conversation. We look forward to enthusiastic participation at the
kick-off meeting!
