The Draft CY2025 VFX Reference Platform has been published at https://vfxplatform.com.

The major focus for next year is the move to oneAPI for TBB and MKL, and the move to ACES 2.0. We expect a USD release supporting oneTBB to be available by our usual cut-off of September 1st.

Python and most of the industry-specific open source packages are getting bumped to the newest version the DCC vendors expect to be able to support.

No CY2025 version changes are planned for gcc, C++ standard, or Qt due to the significant additional engineering effort required on top of the other changes.

Speaking of USD, we believe that the best choice for the community is to allow USD to iterate quickly rather than add it to the Platform which could impede adoption and advancement. I'll start a separate thread to discuss the topic of USD and its potential future inclusion in the VFX Reference Platform.

To provide feedback on this Draft Platform, reply to this thread or respond privately to the Working Group by emailing feedback at vfxplatform.com.

As usual, we are looking to lock down the Final version at the start of September. Like last year, we will provide additional forums to discuss and provide feedback by hosting a public user group meeting via Zoom in July as well as an in-person Birds of a Feather event at SIGGRAPH.

For OpenEXR, we are planning a v3.3 release by the end of August, although we're running a bit behind schedule. Could we request an extension to September 15?

This release should be API compatible with the current v3.2, but replaces much of the guts of the C++ API with calls into the new(ish) Core library underneath, for improved performance.

Thanks,
- Cary

Thank you for the heads up. We have a Working Group meeting later this week where we will discuss the extension request although I don't anticipate it will be an issue.

What was the "significant additional engineering effort" required to
move to glibc 2.34? I would have expected by this point we could
uplift the minimum bar to that without too much hassle.

Raising glibc to 2.34 would cut off people running on EL 8.x which includes glibc 2.28. We know of several studios and software vendors running and building on EL 8 distros.

Changing glibc to 2.34 for CY2026 is definitely on the cards.

The Working Group has approved an extension for OpenEXR through to October 1st to give you some wiggle room if needed.

Vfxplatform.com will be updated to reflect this in the next week or so.

OpenEXR v3.3.0 has been officially released: https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFoundation/openexr/releases/tag/v3.3.0

Thanks again for the extension.
