Cambridge, Massachusetts-
Sprinkler System Helps Contain Cambridge Apartment Fire
Early this morning, firefighters were called to a four-story apartment building in Cambridge, Massachusetts at 1:00 a.m. when flames broke out on a second floor porch. The fire rapidly spread to two other apartment buildings.
A total of 20 apartment units were evacuated safely because the fire sprinklers helped contain the fire, as reported by Cambridge Fire Chief Gerard Mahoney. No injuries were reported.

Fire Sprinkler Extinguishes Fire at Honolulu High-Rise Condominium
In a stark and telling contrast to the fatal Marco Polo condominium fire in Honolulu this past year, a high-rise luxury condo was saved by a single fire sprinkler when fire broke out in a kitchen on the 38th floor.
Honolulu Fire Captain David Jenkins stated that while there was some water damage, it was "positively way better than structure fire damage."
The 43-story luxury tower, with units ranging from $400k to $1.4 million opened to residents just last October. more

Laconia, New Hampshire City Council Approves
Fire Sprinkler Requirement
An amended ordinance was approved Monday night by the Laconia, New Hampshire City Council that will require fire sprinklers in residential "cluster developments". In the past, these developments were only required to have a fire detection system connected
to the city's main fire alarm monitoring system.
Fire Chief Ken Erickson said that the previous requirement was not working well, as underground cables that connected the two systems were failing. On the other hand, he stated, fire sprinkler systems are fed by water mains that seldom fail.
"The technology for sprinklers has improved and they have become less expensive," Erickson said. "Meanwhile, fires have become more intense and construction materials have become more lightweight and subject to collapsing and trapping occupants. Smoke
alarms tell you about the fire, but the sprinkler heads put it out. We're trying to improve safety in the city."
He said there have been no reports of multiple fatality fires in a residential building with a working sprinkler system.
A special thanks to Chief Erickson, for promoting the benefits of residential sprinklers and for keeping the citizens of Laconia safe! more

NJFSAB Hosts Christmas Tree Burn Demo
The following news clip is one of many from the New Jersey Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board's successful Christmas Tree Burn, conducted on November 28th at the Middlesex Fire Academy in Sayreville, New Jersey.
The NJFSAB, in conjunction with New Jersey Assemblyman John Wisniewski, put together this powerful
demonstration to showcase not only how fast a Christmas tree burns, but also how quickly a fire sprinkler system activates to put that fire out.
NJFSAB extends a big thank you to
Sprinkler Fitters Local 696 and the NJFSAB staff for all of their hard work and support. No less than 7 media outlets were on hand today to cover the event. watch

Mount Pleasant, Missouri Considers
Zero Interest Loans for Fire Sprinkler System Installations
in Downtown Buildings
The Mount Pleasant, Missouri City Commission is considering giving up to $25,000 for
each fire sprinkler system installation in the form of a zero-interest loan, payable back to the city if and when the building is sold.
"A zero interest, due-on-sale loan is almost as good as grant, except when you sell the property, the city gets its $25,000 back," Commissioner Tony Kulick said. In all, it is estimated that more
than 30 buildings would be eligible for the loans.
Under the proposed program, downtown property owners who were creating new residential units or have existing residential units, who wanted to install a new fire sprinkler system, could be reimbursed 100 percent of their costs, up to $25,000.
For those who were not creating new residential units or those who do not have existing units, the program would reimburse 50 percent of the costs for a new system, with a maximum of $25,000. more
