Dear FLS Public Education Network Members,

Happy holidays from NFPA. NFPA will be closed December 23-January 1. A few updates and things to let you know about this month.

  • Holiday fire safety: U.S. fire departments respond to nearly 1,000 home fires started by holiday decorations or Christmas trees each year. Discover tip sheets, videos, and other resources that will help you stay safe during the winter holiday season: https://www.nfpa.org/holiday.
  • New free printable for kids: The  I SPY Winter + Fire Safety activity for kids is a great activity for the winter months. Includes a “Sparky says” fire safety message: When the smoke alarm makes a Beep, Beep, Beep sound, get outside and stay outside. Go to your outside meeting place. A good meeting place might be a neighbor’s home, a special tree, mailbox, or a streetlight.
  • Visit Sparky.org for holiday and winter printable activities!
  • NFPA’s Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Campaign: As the holiday season fast approaches, the NFPA® has launched “Charge into Fire Safety™”  to raise awareness about the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and ways to minimize them. The campaign includes an expanded series of resources, guidelines, and information in response to the concerns fire officials have about the growing number of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries that power micromobility devices such as e-bikes and e-scooters, smaller electronics such as cell phones and laptops, and electric vehicles. As the use of these items has increased in recent years, so, too, has the number of fires associated with them. Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Resources: 10-Minute Lesson Plan, Social Media Cards, Safety Tip Sheet, Press Release Template.
  • Put a Freeze on Winter Fires: Heating, holiday decorations, winter storms and candles all contribute to an increased risk of fire during the winter months. NFPA and the U.S. Fire Administration are teaming up to help reduce your risk to winter fires and other hazards, including carbon monoxide and electrical fires. Campaign features updated infographics and social media cards.
  • Product highlight: Give the gift of a cuddly Sparky the Fire Dog plush this holiday season. Sparky would look great under the tree.
  • CRR updates: The CRR team is planning the schedule of 2024 virtual Kitchen Table Sessions. They are looking for suggestions for local programs or topics to highlight. If you would like to share your program at a future Kitchen Table, please email C...@nfpa.org. The CRR Kitchen Table is an opportunity to share successful initiatives, gather feedback from CRR professionals about programs in development, and seek solutions to barriers in the way to successful implementation. Additionally, the NFPA CRR team is now planning for 2024 travel. If you have an event where NFPA CRR expertise would add value, please reach out. We can offer presentations on NFPA 1300, Community Risk Assessment, Partnerships for Effective CRR, and more. Email C...@nfpa.org to make a request.
