Hey JD,
Developing fire loss statistics on lives lost, injuries, and property damage/loss can be an easy project. It can be conducted online from various national and state sources, and the results should be discussed in class. The "human results", e.g., the impact on lives, families, and communities, should be emphasized.
Another good project for the hands-on learners, would be to go and interview or just talk with firefighters who deal with fires in general and/or as a result of juvenile fire-setting (or arson of any kind). Their experience and sense of loss, after seeing families on their worst day losing their homes and possessions, can be enlightening.
Another good project would be to review the videos available, such as those from the Idea Bank [http://www.theideabank.com/2009/products/Firehome.php], on juvenile firesetters "in their own words".
They could write a paper on how their views may have changed after seeing and hearing from their own peer group on what JF is about.
Developing empathy and understanding in this age group can have positive results, and would be the goal of these projects.
Just my $0.02.
David

In addition to creating an escape plan and doing a home fire drill, we have parents complete a Home Fire Prevention Checklist and an Alarm & Escape Plan Sign-off (see attached). We also require that they write a 2-paged paper on various topics: "Fire Problems in the U.S.", "Arson Problems and/or Burn Injuries in the U.S. Involving Those Under the Age of 18", "Dangers of Setting Fires in Occupied Buildings" and "Dangers and Consequences of Pulling a False Alarm." whichever applies. Hope this is helpful.
