Reporting Grants for Women Journalists

The Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists seeks to promote the work and advance the role of women in the news media across the globe. The average grant size is US$10 thousand. The grant is intended to give women journalists the opportunity to pursue international stories of importance through gender-sensitive coverage of underreported topics. (Note: This may include various focus areas of the Terra Viva Grants Directory, i.e., women in agriculture, or stories about and by female conservationists.) The Fund for Women Journalists accepts applications on a rolling basis.

Pulitzer Center Reporting Grants for Journalists

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting provides grants to individual journalists and news organizations to support in-depth, high-impact reporting on topics of global importance. Awards cover reporting costs. Most awards for international travel are between US$5 thousand and US$10 thousand. In light of the current pandemic, the Pulitzer Center prioritizes COVID-19 projects as well as other projects that can be completed without much traveling or where field work can be completed relatively soon and without risking one's own safety and the safety of others. Grants are open to journalists, writers, photographers, radio producers or filmmakers of any nationality.

Coastal Resilience Story Grants 2023

EJN is offering story grants with support from the Kingfisher Foundation to journalists to cover coastal resilience in their communities. These journalists will receive support from journalist mentors and a coastal resilience expert to increase media coverage of this critical issue in their region. We plan to issue grants of approximately $1,200 each by late February 2023 with the expectation that all stories will be published by November 30, 2023 at the latest. Applicants should consider this timeline when drafting their work plan.

Public Awareness on Climate Change

The Minor Foundation for Major Challenges funds communication projects that mitigate anthropogenic climate change. Proposals should focus on influencing public opinions, providing inspiration, changing attitudes, spreading information, etc. The Foundation welcomes applications from all over the world. The Foundation makes large grants ranging from €20 thousand to €200 thousand, although larger projects may be considered.

Ocean Media Initiative Story Grants 2023: Reporting on Marine Pollution

Journalists worldwide, preferably from coastal countries, can apply for reporting grants up to US$1,200. The initiative aims to increase the quality and quantity of ocean pollution-related stories in the media, and build the capacity of journalists to improve their coverage of ocean-related topics. Story ideas must focus on marine pollution – its sources, impacts on ecosystems and marine species; and ongoing efforts to curb and regulate sources of marine pollution.

Uncovering the Plastic Crisis: Stories of Pollution and Solutions

Climate Tracker Asia is seeking multimedia story proposals from journalists and communicators (including students!) from the Asia Pacific region who want to shine light on the links between plastic pollution and climate change, and the solutions to the two crises. Grantees will receive story grant amounting to EUR 200, individualized mentoring, resources on the links between plastic pollution and climate change, and solutions journalism, networking opportunities with journalists and experts in the region.

International Women's Media Foundation launches 2023 photo contest

Women photojournalists who reported in dangerous environments can be nominated for an award. Nominations must be in English and include 12 photographs that best represent the scope and style of their candidate’s work. The winner will receive a cash prize of US$20,000 and her work will be showcased publicly. Self-nominations will be accepted.
