This is how I found his phone number - by searching BT (British Telecom). Birdie’s Family address is #1 on the list attached.
I am going to send a card too.

List,

Would someone want to host a ‘Birdie Swap’ in his honor, but with a twist. Just one fly from each tier sent in to the meister, frame them as a plate, and send it to the family from his VFB friends?  (Was Birdie and IOFFer? Anyone still have the list?)

I’d say open the ‘swap’ and whoever contributes by the time for framing will be in the group. The ‘frame-meister’ will set the date.  I’ll contribute the money for the frame and matte, unless others want to chip in $$ with their flies.

The only work will be mounting and framing, not sending back sets to all swappers as for a regular swap. Depending on how many sign up, the frame may not be too big, but it’s the gesture that counts. And we only have to tie one special fly. Hopefully a VFBer with some framing experience will step up. We could do this with just a dozen flies, but more would be better. We could each get a photo of it for our memories.

If he was an IOFFer, having his certificate in the plate center would be perfect, with the flies surrounding it. What better send-off for a VFB fanatic.

Sign-ups:
1.  DonO-  realistic stonefly- the ‘Birdie Special’, plus another for the framer

I checked the records.  I still have all the old docs for the IOFF that I did and Birdie was not on the list. I am sure that no one would mind if he were added.  I would be happy to get some parchment and make up one for the swap and add a fly.  Let me know.
It was also kind of sad looking through the list of original members to the IOFF.  Several of them are gone like Mark and Murf.

Just as an FYI on this proposed project:

>  frame them as a plate, and send it to the family from his VFB friends?

One thing we need to consider is packing and shipping to England.

I meistered a similar framed assortment of flies for Mark Delaney's family.  (That's why I mentioned that I am not a good at framing.)  It was packed very securely by UPS (rather expensively packed as a matter of fact) and shipped insured.  When it got from Indiana to Louisiana, the glass was broken.  I don't think his family ever did get it corrected.  In fact, I don't think they ever took it in to file a complaint.

In addition to the packing and cost of shipping, we will also have customs to deal with on the receiving end.  We don't want Mrs. Burgess hit with a big customs bill.

It will take someone who knows a lot more about this than I do.

Framing as a circular plate does present problems and causes the whole thing to become larger as it would likely be a circle in a square frame. I can’t remember what the IOFF certificates look like - I am not an IOFF member. Perhaps another idea would be to get a photograph printed by a lab of Birdie & his daughter Kelly with the flies underneath. There will likely only be a few flies. My plan would be to take it with me on my next trip to England. I don’t think customs would be a problem. If I have access to a car, I may even be able to deliver it to his widow. I would want to keep it as small as reasonably possible.

Hi all,
I know I am just lurking these days but this got me out of my hole.
This is a great idea. And as several folk have already said presents one problem. Getting it to Mrs Burgess a. Unbroken and b. So she doesn't have a customs bill.
So............... how about I meister it here in the UK and frame it. I will not deliver it but get it delivered by courier insured. I don't like to do the bereaved bit. My nuts are too small!

Just need numbers of intended and a way of covering costs not that they would be huge. I have done some framing flies and take various levels of care but most turn out ok!!
This one would receive the utmost attention to detail. I would go with a square or oblong frame not round. Positioning is easier.
As for the IOFF well I don't have a list of members but am fairly sure Birdie was not a member.
So let me have your thoughts but more importantly if you are in don't hang around because I think we need to get it done quickly so she understands the significance of it all to those that corresponded with the man.
Over to you folks
Keith

Don we have the power to make him an honorary member! If we could get a certificate then it would make a great frame background and we could doctor it so his name appeared in the cert right?

GREAT idea, Keith. That makes the most sense of anything.

> As for the IOFF well I don't have a list of members but am fairly sure

No he wasn't. And the more I have thought about it, I don't feel
including the list of IOFF members is such a good idea, even making
Brian an "honorary" member. Why? Because it was all done in jest and
was written quite humorously. I don't think a person would be able to
see any humor in it, having just lost her husband to a long and bitter
struggle with cancer.

However, the fly plate from his closest friends could be very meaningful.

Just my own tuppence worth.

Hi KP:

That would solve the major logistical problem since you are located in the UK and I know you from way back when. I have no problem with a certificate or whatever from the IOFF to Birdie as recognition. The other alternative is to include a photo lab copy of the photo of Birdie & his daughter. The photo is a little dark but could be made slightly lighter and more vibrant with Adobe Lightroom or a similar app. The photo lab could probably do this.

Thinking about it Al you may well be right on the certificate. So I would say forget that idea.
Nev the photo is a good shout. If you wish you can email it and I will have a play with Picassa and use it as a focal point in
the centre.
Are we going to limit the number?  After all this subject got me out in the open again so may also do so with other lurky types.
I ask because this will be the factor in frame size.
Any fly you fancy as long as it fits the frame ( NO 17/0 hooks Don :-) 15/0 are fine ;-) )
So there you go. I will tie a fly on a salmon hook Spey style.
Cheers for now

Hi KP:

I have taken a copy of the photo that Birdie’s daughter Kelly sent and have used Adobe Lightroom to perform a minor crop,
The seat in front of them with the sweater & water bottle have been removed as the main attention is Birdie & Kelly. I have also
tweaked with the exposure and white balance in order to make it a bit brighter. I am no expert with Lightroom and am still
trying to learn how to use it to improve my photos.

I suggest that you locate a good quality photo lab. Very often the best may be found at a store that specializes in cameras.
Ideally you could copy it to a thumb/flash drive and take it to a local store and discuss what you want for the picture.
It should always be saved at full strength i.e. full size.  I will email to you via Dropbox full size and then you can download them.

Re the flies - In my humble opinion, trout flies and salmon flies don’t display very well when they are mixed together especially
as the hook size for salmon flies is normally much bigger. This is just my personal opinion, but I feel that the end result will look
better if the flies are either all trout or all salmon but not a mix. Furthermore, it is better to keep the size roughly the same.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I attach my draft of the pictures. The darker on is the original and the brighter one my tweaked version . I will send the full size
versions to you via dropbox…………………..Nev

Hi Al:

Adobe is changing the way it is doing business. I purchased Lightroom 5 Christmas 2013 and they have just recently released Lightroom 6, however one can get the latest versions of Lightroom and Photoshop by monthly subscription of $9.95/month as an online web based program. It is rumoured that Lightroom 6 may be the last time that it can be purchased as a software program on a disc and all future version will be web based. I suspect that Adobe makes more $$$ that way.

photographic manipulation to justify buying it in any shape or form.

Hi Nev,
I think the photo after adjustment is perfect and needs no more attention just a good printer to print it out nicely.
So that's the background/focal point sorted for the frame. Frame size will be governed by how many flies are going to get done. So lets get this one
sorted asap.
If you need my postal addy then pm me or email me using BIRDY as the subject line. I will get you to send it to my works addy as we are open 7days and the post is better than sending to my home addy.
I have changed my mind on my fly. It will be a wet fly or two based on bird names. EG Woodcock and Hares Ear. I think Allan is doing similar.
As its a frame could everyone that is sending a fly include a small business card size card with the name of the fly and a signature. I will put them on the rear of the frame
if there's enough room or in a booklet type thing if not.
ANY questions let me know folks.
Cheers

Yes, please provide your postal address or your work address if that is better for you.

I would suggest that you copy the photograph that I sent you to a thumb/flash drive, smart phone or send by e-mail to a photo shop, discuss the size alternatives and select the preferred size and have just one photo made on proper photographic paper, as the photo will last longer that way without the danger of fading. Get a quote and advise the cost.

Once you have the photo size, go to a frame shop and select a suitable frame or get the price and size and let us know how much you will need from each of us.

If you and the other VFB members from USA wish, I could have them send their flies and payment to my P.O.  box in Blaine, WA with is just over the border from where I live.  This would save them the cost of sending individually to the UK. When I have them (USA + mine) I will forward all in one package to your preferred address. This is optional and just a suggestion. Those VFB members in Australia, Germany and the Netherlands will have to send their flies & payment directly to you.

Flies are on the way. Mailed yesterday.
Thanks for helping out.

I’m hoping to retire next year and do ‘fly stuff’ exclusively, although I may pick up the odd ridiculously high-paying consulting project here and there.

How hard would it be to make a Virtual Fly Box in the new format, like FAOL? It’d be nice to see a resurgence of our favorite web meeting room.
