Do any of you know Scott? If so, can you verify his whereabouts? Otherwise, this looks like a scam that is prevalent right now, especially since he's asking for british pounds..

Subject: [VFB] Awful Situation.....(Scott Sickau)

Hello,

I'm sorry for this odd request because it might get to you too urgent but it's because of the situation of things right now.

I’m with family on vacation in London, United Kingdom, we got mugged last night in an alley by a gang of thugs on our way back from shopping, one of them had a knife poking my neck for almost two minutes and everything we had on us including my cell phone, credit cards were all stolen, quite honestly it was beyond a dreadful experience for us but looking on the bright side we weren't seriously hurt or injured and we are still alive so that is whats important. I've reported to the cops here and canceled all our cards,it appeared I had acted quickly enough or they almost would have succeeded in cleaning out my bank account. I'm really having some difficulties clearing our hotel bills and also need to pick up a voucher ticket at the counter for us to catch a flight back home as soon as possible.

All we need right now is £1,650pounds, but anything you can spare pending when we get things straighten out will be appreciated and I promise to refund as soon as we arrive home safely.

Write me back and let me know how soon you can get it to us asap.

Scott.

This IS a scam. Scott's e-mail address list has been hacked. Scott
did not send this. Unfortunately, he's clicked on a URL from someone
he trusted, whose e-mail had also been hacked.

Some new transparent 'juice-scuds':  (If you are interested in tying them, let me know.  You need some UV cured clear goop and a small black-light flash-light or similar.  I let the sun do the major curing.  You need to use rope-dubbing with ice-dub, or normal dubbing with wire segments will do (just won't look like natural segments).)

This is what I have been sending off list- might as well put it up here:

Firstly, my juice-bug tutorial is here:

The scud is just variations on this theme, depending how big you want the scud.

Instead of bending the jelly-rope back between the eyes, after the rope-dubbed part, I leave out the eyes and snip the JR off at a 45degree angle and tie it down.  Important to tie with mono (I use 2# test clear), as the head cement makes it go clear.

The next piece of JR is tied again on top, and again trimmed off at the front at 45 degrees, so that the head has a scud-like taper.  Leave the tail long and trim it like you want it when done.

Once I've got the scud looking like I want it, with the legs brushed down, I soak just the body with thinned vinyl cement to make it all go clear.  That will make for a nice, clear body that shows the hilites of your underbody.  But I like to build up the body with the UV clear goop, so I just layer some on top to the shape of the scud, make sure some locks in on the sides, and then freeze it with my litle $15 black light flashlight.  It doesn't cure it, just locks it into shape, still tacky.  I put a bunch of flies on a block of styro and set it on a windowsill in the sunshine to let them cure hard.

The result is a transparent, light-weight scud that doesn't feel like a nickle rolling around in your palm (like epoxy would).

Variations:
  • Tie down pearl or whatever to the hook shank, gap-wrap ice dub over it, then two layers of jelly-rope and goop.  Nice clear pearlescent reflections in the body.
  • Can rope-dub the shank and 1st Jelly-rope layer also = more color hilites in the body.
  • Tie a dense but narrow, well-segmented rope-dub body, then JR and goop.
  • Tie the same as above, but follow up with a back case of pearl tinsel, using a tag mono follow-up in the segment grooves to segment the pearl strip.  Then JR and Goop.
  • Mix a tiny bit of opal glitter in the goop- not much, and it looks good.  Too much makes it cloudy.
  • A tiny dab of black paint makes the eyes, cover with a last coat of vinyl to freeze them.

It's a very flexible recipe.  The mysis shrimp is a combo juice-bug, enlongated scud:

A couple of questions:
1. What do you use to thin the vinyl cement?
2. The UV Goo - does it have a brand name?  Is that it UV Goo?

1.  We've had this thread lots of times before.  I use H-66 vinyl cement, and you can get it by the pint or gallon or 5gal bucket at any tent and awning store.  I buy it in pint jars. Lasts me years.

It's very thick as 'virgin vinyl' and will thicken even more if you leave the lid off.

The thinner is made up of 3 components, gotten from paint stores:
Acetone
Methylethylkeytone
Toluene

Use this stuff in a well-ventilated room or expect company inside you head.

Thin cement to the thickness desired- re-thin as necessary.  It is thin enough when it penetrates what you are tying and the head threads.  Mono tied heads will go clear and the material underneath will show through.

If it clouds up on you, there's too much humidity in the air, or you are breathing heavy on it between slugs of beer.

I use the needle applicator squeeze bottles for the thinned version.  The virgin stuff from the can is too thick.  Store it in glass jars with the needle-cap applicator.

2.  UV cured cements come in different wrappers, but I think it is the same stuff.  I buy the little Loon's wader repair kits for 4 or 5 bucks, and it lasts me for a good while (and I can use it to reapir my waders...imagine that).  If you're going production, buy that stuff in the pint jars on line.  Can't remember where.  Just Google up UV cured adhesives and cements.

UV lights come in different costs and intensities.  I bought a little UV flashlight for $10 to $15, can't remember, but it was pretty cheap.  It won't 'cure' the goop, but it does freeze it so it doesn't droop and run, if you do one fly at a time.  It will remain tacky until you sit in the sun for awhile.  I sit them out on a strip of styrofoam in the morning and by the time the sun moves off that window, they are well-cured.

3.  This is wide open for experimentation- so have fun and imagine what different things can be added into the transparent body.  I really like the pearl segmented strip up the back.  Flourescent colors are a blast and you can check them with the black light.  Fish see in the UV spectrum, so these would give an edge wherever the advantage lies, maybe low-light.  But my best trolling lures were flourescent rapalas on the brightest sunny days.  Then when the sun dropped, they hit the black-topped pearl bodied ones.  Add that to your design calculations.

4.  Saltwater shrimp would be the next logical step to experiment with after the mysis:

5.  Jelly rope comes in lots of colors, and some with glitters inside it.  Time to experiment with a bulk purchase co-op swap, to get a good supply of colors at a reasonable price.

6.  If you have some old transparent Swannundaze or clear D-rib or V-rib, that will work, too.  Maybe clear Larva-Lace would work.

7. Experiment with weaving and lacing the bodies with clear components, even heavy monos.  When the clear goop goes on, nice things start to happen.

8.  Clear goop over beads makes for some neat effects:

If that much last you for years - well, it would last me for millenia.  I was going to use the Loon for the UV.  I use it  and have it but the vinyl is there a smaller version or sub?
