Greetings,

The list has been quiet the past couple months, but activity on the standards front has not. If there was ever any doubt that hitching the veterinary wagon to the human star was a good idea, check out what has been going on in the human space:

The Health IT Standards Committee ( http://healthit.hhs.gov/portal/server.pt?open=512&objID=1271&parentname=CommunityPage&parentid=3&mode=2) meets regularly, and works with the Office of the National Coordinator who sponsors the Nationwide Health Information Network. NHIN is an implementation of standards, particularly related to medical record exchange. A small number of organizations have built systems to contribute to NHIN. NHIN CONNECT (http://www.connectopensource.org/) provides opensource tools to facilitate connecting to NHIN. NHIN leverages many other existing standards, including LOINC, HL7, and the IHE profiles. Mirth and other projects have built tools to collaborate with CONNECT.

The Health Information Technology Standards Panel, commissioned by ONC and managed by ANSI, has developed a number of profiles for accomplishing various medical record exchange actions. These profiles are based on other standards and profiles, including HL7, LOINC, SNOMED, and various IHE profiles. HITSP is acting as an American-specific subset of the broader IHE community. At this time, HITSP's future is uncertain -- it's charter expired in April, but details on its potential renewal have not yet been made public.

Open Health Tools (OHT, at www.openhealthtools.org) is an open-source community that has built tools to implement, among other things, several IHE profiles. IBM and many other major human healthcare vendors have contributed to this community.

The National Library of Medicine has hired Dr. Jim Case as a SNOMED expert.

The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM, formerly SCAR) has created a veterinary portal on their website, and developed a recommended program for veterinary participants.

===============

I'd like to set up a meeting at AVMA on Tuesday, August 3 (so as not to conflict with other Information Technology presentations), perhaps 10am-12pm. This townhall meeting would continue where it left off in Las Vegas/WVC. I'd like to share feedback from participants at the last meeting about any learning that has happened related to other standards bodies; perhaps some professional organizations can share their current plans; and I can share some of my research into the human side. Other submissions on what to discuss?

Most importantly: could I get someone to volunteer to schedule [and pay for] a room? (Please?)

All,

Having now gotten some feedback on the proposed schedule, it appears that Tuesday for many is a travel day. As such, I propose to move the meeting to:

Sunday, August 1, 5-7pm

Location has not been determined, though it may be possible to hold it in the same room the Talbot symposium will occupy earlier in the day. This will not conflict with any scheduled conference events that I can determine.

The AVI kindly noted that informatics talks are scheduled through 5:50pm. To avoid conflict with this, I further propose to have the meeting:

Sunday, August 1, 6-7:30pm

It's a little shorter, to allow for a reasonable dinner.

Is Sunday August 1 6-7:30 firm now? I'm booking flights and the
meeting is one of the main reasons I'm coming, so I don't want to end
up missing it. Thanks for getting it organized Dennis!

Yes - I have heard no complaints yet about this time, so let's lock it in. Final answer!
