Dear all:
1. A few weeks ago, a fellow Air Veteran, Wg Cdr PG Joshi, happened to mention to me that the screen display that popped up on the canteen counter computer when his card was inserted stated " Your card is about to expire-you will need to get your card re-issued" or words to this effect. He is one of the earliest to have been issued a Canteen Smart Card, in 2004 to be precise, and thus, his canteen cards are about to enter their 10th year of validity.
2. Wingco Joshi asked me if I knew anything about this. Promising him that I would make enquiries, I ascertained from the long serving Manager of the local canteen (a very competent Hony Capt, who has been the manager for more than 10 years, that there is indeed a requirement that the cards be re-issued (fresh cards) on completion of 10 years. However, he stated that to the best of his knowledge, the process was Veteran friendly, in that when the card was finally to be replaced, all that was required of the user would be to fill in a fresh form (possibly with a fresh set of photographs, to take into account the necessary increase in the grey/white hair number, and/or change in facial features as one ages). He stated that there would be no need to surrender the old cards (and stop their usage) while the new cards were being manufactured and delivered.
3. As most older pensioners would have got their cards in 2004 or thereafter (mine were issued in 2006-I made do with the older booklet/ paper canteen card prior to that), they would need to address the requirement pointed out by Wg Cdr Joshi from 2014 onwards.
4. The requirement, to me, seems fair and logical, as it will help in weeding out dead cards, as also in updating changes occasioned by death etc of one or the other (the Veteran or the spouse). Of course, the photographs will show a more handsome, dignified visage!
5. I am putting out this e mail to the Veterans community for them to get prepared for it, and for the Canteen Division of the IESM to broadcast the specifics.
Regards,
Ravi Mani
