KANNUR: The Central Para-Military Forces Ex-Servicemen Welfare
Association has said that their demand for the canteen facility has
been approved by the Centre. The new central police canteen at the
CRPF camp in Thiruvananthapuram will be inaugurated by revenue
minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on December 21.
Association secretary C Balakrishnan said the authorities have
sanctioned three central police canteens in the state at the CRPF
camp, Thiruvananthapuram, CISF Camp in Kochi, and CRPF Camp, Peringom,
in Kannur. "All these canteens will have facilities similar to that of
defence canteens. The state government has issued orders to relax the
value-added tax ( VAT) on the articles, including liquor, sold through
these canteens," he said.
They said the decision to open the canteens was the result of the
discussion that the association had with the Union home ministry
officials. They also said efforts are on to start a district-level
office Welfare and Rehabilitation Board (WARB), and also a canteen
under its control.
They said once the canteen at Peringom becomes functional it would
benefit the paramilitary forces ex-servicemen and their families in
Kannur and Kasargod. The association has started preparing identity
cards and asked all its members to fill the application form.
The association said the other demands of the organization like better
salary and pension benefits on a par with that of other defence
forces, as also the one-rank one-pension scheme, have been discussed
with the prime minister.
