There is not necessarily a file extension on content:// Uri values pointing to files. AFAIK, Gmail does not include a file extension on theirs, and so it will not match your pathPattern. Also, host is missing the android: namespace prefix.

If the email will be sent with a distinct MIME type for your file, use that in android:mimeType and drop the remaining attributes. If the email will not be sent with a distinct MIME type for your file, then AFAIK you are out of luck.

Something interesting that I discovered while typing up this post; when using the file explorer for adding an attachment in the gmail app, the Android/data directory is not an option! It shows up when you are using the file explorer outside of the gmail app though. So I'm thinking this may be a permissions problem then? It cannot access this folder. If that's the case, what would be a recommended location to store this file? Ideally it would be some sort of cache location or temporary file location in this instance.

I can't download attachments in my primary Gmail account (the same one in use for android) using the Gmail app. When I tap the download icon, either nothing happens or I get a message saying that the attachment failed to download and to try again later.

I'm having an issue with sending attachments from Gmail on android.Whenever I send an attachment, it disappears from the message and is not delivered.Visiting Gmail through web interface confirms the attachment is not there. This happened to me using both my phone and tablet both running android 7.0

However, downloading attachments works fine on two other Gmail accounts (technically work Gsuite accounts) within the same app. It's only my primary personal account that fails to download. I've already tried clearing the Gmail app's cache and data to no avail. I'm using a Galaxy Tab S6 running Android 11 on OneUI 3.1. Any help would be appreciated.

After knowing the reasons why Gmail failed to download attachments, you can try the following solutions to fix it. We will divide the content into two parts, one is for the problem on your Android phone, another part is for you can't download attachments on your computer.

Sometimes, when attempting to download email attachments using mobile data, the presence of an active data-saving mode on your phone can potentially stop Gmail's ability to utilize mobile data in the background. Here is how to enable Background Data Usage:

Disabling Gmail Lab (advanced) settings can help identify if any of these experimental features are causing problems with downloading attachments in Gmail. By disabling them, you can revert to the default settings and potentially resolve the issue.

Note that Gmail Lab settings are experimental and may not be fully optimized or compatible with all attachments. Disabling them does not affect the core functionality of Gmail and can help in troubleshooting attachment download problems.

If you still have problems downloading Gmail attachments after trying the above solutions, try the professional cloud file manager - MultCloud, which helps you to download your attachments and documents from Gmail easier. No more wasting time searching for specific emails or struggling with cumbersome manual downloads.

Now Gmail failed to download attachment in Android or on the computer have been solved by yourself. Just find the above solutions separately for Android or computer to fix. Or you have another easy way to download Gmail emails with all attachments to a hard drive without downloading them one by one.

The file in question for the attachment will need to be from Shared Storage otherwise GMail will not be able to find it (and as Taifun says, could not be picked from the ASD using the ActivityStarter in any case)

To attach an email in Gmail, you can select the emails in the inbox by ticking them and then choosing Forward as attachment from the More menu. Or open a new Gmail email window and drag the email(s) you want to attach into the window. In both cases, they will automatically be converted into EML format and attached to the email.

Saving Gmail attachments to your phone on Android used to be over-complicated, but since a major update to the Android app last year, it has become a whole lot easier. You no longer even need to be in the actual email thread containing the attachment to download it to your phone!

Alternatively, you can download attachments from inside the individual email thread. Just navigate to the exact email containing the attachment you want, then press the Download icon next to the attachment.

When using the nextDNS android app with standard ads and tracker blocklist, I cannot download attachments in the official Gmail android app from my Gmail account (but from my university Exchange server it works even with the Gmail app). The download progress never advances over 0%. I am not using the block page setting.

I already tried to set some of the blocked domains like googletagmanager.com and google-analytics.com on the allowlist, but this did not help. Does anyone know which domains to allow for repairing this issue? Alternatively, does anyone know any other solution besides switching nextDNS off for every attachment download?

Thank you very much for your response. Apart from the NextDNS adblock blocklist, I also activated some entries of the security tab (Threat-Intelligence, Safe Browsing, Kryptojacking, IDN protection, typo protection, DGS protection, arachnid porn protection), but no youth protection and nothing in the denylist. However, when I try to download an attachment, no domains seem to blocked and the following domains seem to work fine:

Ruby Balloon I now added *.com to the allowlist, restarted the NextDNS app, but still cannot download attachments. There has to be some issue with the NextDNS app / VPN itself and not the filter lists, doesn't it?

Ruby Balloon I am on Android version 8 and thus have no "Private DNS" available which is the reason why I had to install the NextDNS app. And without NextDNS, opening / downloading attachments works fine and within seconds, even without having to wipe GMail data. Hence, it has to do with NextDNS somehow.

I wish I could simply exclude GMail from NextDNS app like it is possible, e.g., in DNS66 (which however seems not to support DNS-over-TLS and thus is not useful for me). If possible, I would want to stay with the official NextDNS app.

Reluctantly, I now changed from the official NextDNS client to Nebulo which offers DoT and DoH to custom servers like NextDNS and you can manually ignore certain installed apps concerning the DNS requests. Now, downloading attachments works fine again. Would be great if the official NextDNS app could either also allow for such an ignore list. Thanks again!

Do you want to send photos to someone with Gmail? You can easily insert a photo attachment to your email with the Gmail app or the desktop website. If you're using the mobile app, you'll just need to allow permission to your photo gallery first. This wikiHow will show you how to insert and attach photos into Gmail using your iPhone, Android, or Windows or Mac computer.

I often need to attach attachments from one email (or multiple ones) to another, without wanting to forward the original message. In a desktop client I would simply click and drag the attachment from one message to the other, but that doesn't work in Gmail. Having to first save the attachment is a pain... Is there a way this can be done?

edit
In particular, I am looking for an easy solution to a situation where I want to consolidate multiple attachments from different messages into one new message. For single messages I'll live with forwarding and changing the message per below answers...

1. I display note containing the pdf. Long press the pdf attachment. An option pops up with a download arrow button. This seems to provide the download, saving it to my phone BUT the file created on my phone is a 1.00 kb file that does not open.

3.I am able to view the pdf from within the note and was hoping there was an option to "Save" or download the attachment from there but that doesn't seem to be the case. There is an Up Arrow in the top right corner but that just appears to be another link to the same share options from number 2 above. I did try selecting Google Drive as an option this time around and it saved a file to my google Drive but it was called NeutronShare:applications/pdf and cannot be opened.

So, if I only have my phone with me and I need to pull or copy an actual pdf attachment from one of my notes how would I do that? I don't want to SHARE the Note itself I just need to get the attachment. In this case I had to get to a computer and pull the pdf from there.

Since new version of evernote, I can take pictures and save them to note with no problem, however when I download a picture to my android phone (version 10), the file shows up but when I try to open it I get "couldn't open file". Running a business here and sure would appreciate any help. Long time Evernote customer and getting frustrated. Thank you!
