1. Did you know…?

“Neva”- The First Russian Naval Ship in Australia
On the dawn of 16 June 1807 Aborigines of the Cammeraigal tribe which
camped on the northern shore of the Port-Jackson Bay (now Sydney),
noticed a small three-mast ship tenaciously sailing towards the
English settlement, maneuvering and struggling against the wind.
A white flag with a blue cross was fluttering above the aft of the
ship. At last the ship anchored in the Neutral Bay where foreign ships
usually lay anchor.
Thus the first in the history visit of a Russian naval ship to
Australia began. It was the “Neva” sloop, under the command of Captain
L.A. Gagemeister.
The crew of the sloop was small- 5 officers, doctor, an RAC
commissioner and 36 other ranks.
Two other participants of the navigation were- doctor Karl Mordgorst
and lieutenant Moritz Berkh, a future historian and admiral, commander
of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. A young podshturman (junior navigator)
of ‘Neva” Efim Klochkov. Other officers- second lieutenant Alexander
Kozlianinov and shturman Ivan Vasiliev. The cargo was supervised by
commissioner Rodion Zakharov.

2. Do you know anyone famous…?

Nikolai Nikolayevich Mikloucho-Maclay (1846-1888)
The first Russian citizen to make a major contribution to Australian
science. In Sydney, he established a biological research station at
Watson’s bay, where he experimented in the fields of anatomical,
anthropological and ethnological research.
Mikloucho-Maclay occupies a particular niche in the history of Russian-
Australian relations in the Χ1Χ century. He lived in Australia for
more than five years, and his name had become a symbol of connections
between our two countries.

10. HOW I ENDED THIS SUMMER (Kak ya provyol etim letom)

Take an extraordinary cinematic trip to the end of the Earth.
One of the most distinctive and heralded films to emerge from Europe
in recent years is Alexei Popogrebsky’s multi award-winning new
thriller HOW I ENDED THIS SUMMER (M). Set against the otherworldly
landscape of the Russian Arctic Circle, it’s an immersive morality
tale of isolation and survival against the elements. Sergei a seasoned
meteorologist, and young graduate Pavel, are spending the summer
months together at a remote polar station. Sergei is rattled by
Pavel’s youthful carelessness and complacency, but the two go about
their shared day-to-day lives, albeit with a heavy dose of mutual
distrust. But when Pavel receives a gravely urgent radio message that
out of panic, fear and intimidation he fails to pass on, he
inadvertedly triggers a series of events that spin inexorably out of
control… The Australian Premiere Season of HOW I ENDED THIS SUMMER
commences April 7 at Cinema Nova, Palace Como and Brighton Bay.

12. News from the HACC Desk – It’s time to get active

At the Russian Ethnic Representative Council (RERC), we are constantly
seeking to improve the way we do things and enhance the care we
provide. We are also committed to ensuring that our clients are as
actively involve in their own care as possible. That’s why we support
and have introduced the Active Service Model.
A Victorian Department of Health initiative, the Active Service Model
(ASM) emphasizes proactive and/or preventative measures that have the
potential to reduce older people’s dependency on healthcare, or slow
their decline, even in the presence of substantial levels of
disability as a result of chronic illness.
The ASM is designed to help clients to do as much for themselves as
possible, thus reducing their reliance on healthcare providers. The
key elements of the Active Service Models are:
• To maintain and promote a person’s ability to live as independently
and autonomously as possible
• A holistic person and family-centred approach to care that promotes
wellness and participation in goal setting and decisions about care.
• Timely and flexible services that respond to the person’s goal and
maximize their independence.
• Collaborative relationships between providers, for the benefit of
people using services.
The Active Service Model is a response to the forecast that a high
proportion of the growing ageing population will have chronic
conditions that result in significant levels of disability in the last
10-15 years of life. The will inevitably lead to increasing demand for
community-based services.
The success of the Active Service Model depends on organizations,
including RERC, recognizing that client independence will be achieved
by the way staff and volunteers relate to clients; their expectations
of clients; and their capacity to engage clients.
It requires a well supported, skilled and adaptive workforce, who
supports the philosophy of working with people rather than simply
caring of them.
Its success is also dependent on service providers with complementary
skills working together for the benefit of clients, so that care is
designed around the needs of individuals. The Active Service Model can
build on the strengths and initiatives but it may also require the
adoption of new tools, techniques, processes, procedures and
partnerships to achieve this.
As such, RERC is progressively introducing methods of service delivery
that promote an overall wellness or ‘active service’ approach. Change
will be incremental, and will require building on and improving
existing practices as well as introducing any new practices in a
timely and manageable way.
