How does "Calculate the best plane for the selected atoms" feature work?

In Edit / Lattice Planes, there is a feature that allows you to find the best lattice plane through multiple selected points. I have found this super useful, but I can't find in the documentation what algorithm is being used to calculate the "best plane" so am wondering if anyone knows?
