I have downloaded VESTA for MAC to plot charge density from CHGCAR. The version is OpenGL version: 2.1 NVIDIA-8.6.22.

When I try to open using File/open, the CHGCAR file remains gray,i.e., it is not recognized by VESTA. Per suggestion of some on the web, I copied the OUTCAR file into the same directory. Still VESTA does not recognize CHGCAR.

The CHGCAR was generated by linux cluster at supercomputing center. I copied it to my Mac. My mac runs on  Mac OX 10.8.2. And my VASP is VASP 4.6.

Could someone suggest how to get VESTA working?

I haven't tried CHGCAR yet, but I was able to get POSCAR working by renaming it as POSCAR.vasp. Using other file extensions (.txt or .poscar) seems to cause VESTA to hang, regardless of whether OUTCAR is present.

It would be nice if VESTA would open aliases and/or soft links, so we could either define an alias or a soft link like this:
    ln -s POSCAR POSCAR.vasp
Then we would not have to rename POSCAR every time or find & drag it.
