I am having a problem selecting atoms/structures on my new Dell Inspiron 14 7420 2-in-1 laptop (Windows 11). Whenever I select an atom or polyhedron, it randomly selects another one. I have tested this on several other computers and it works without issue. I tried every VESTA version, but the same issue persists on only my laptop. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It must be due to a bug in graphics driver. Please try updating graphics driver (if there is newer version).

I am having a similar (same?) issue. When I try to select two or three atoms to measure the distance or angle, it keeps selecting the first atom I click, no matter where I click afterward. I guess for the moment I will be taking screenshots and measuring the angles in ImageJ....

I'm on a X1Carbon Thinkpad gen11, with Windows 11, a 13th Gen Intel core i5-1335U, and an Intel Iris Xe Graphics integrated GPU. And yes my drivers are all up-to-date.

Maybe I should also mention, I installed the 64-bit Edition v.3.5.8. Maybe I'll try to install the other version for a spin.

Nope! 32.bit version gives me the same bug.

Same issue on a thinkpad with an i7.

I updated all my drivers, but VESTA is still having the same issue on my laptop.

Hi, I recently encountered this problem too. Has this issue been resolved?

I am still having this issue. I noticed that atom selection only does not work when I try to select another atom while another is selected (deselecting the original atom, then clicking on another works). Polyhedral selection does not work at all, as the same one or two polyhedra are selected whenever I click on any of them (regardless of it being the initial or subsequent selection).

Dear all,
I experience the same problem. It select a random atom/polyhedra and remain on it wherever I click.
I have a Intel i7 HP laptop running with Windows 11
Best regards,
Nicolas

Did someone solve it? If I choose polyhedra style then I cannot anymore select and delete just one of them.

I have been having the problem on 3.5.7 and 3.5.8. I'm on Win 11 with the latest driver and OS updates. It's not that it doesn't work, rather it takes 15-30 s for the selection to occur. I also sometimes observe a similar sluggish response clicking on the menu icons.

Has anyone found a solution for this bug? I am having the same issues with selecting polyhedra, it really limits VESTA as a visulization tool.

I also have the same issue using VESTA 3.5.8 (64x) on a computer running Windows 11 Home (23H2) with the following specs:
13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700   2.10 GHz
32.0 GB RAM
Intel(R) UHD Graphics 770 (driver version: 32.0.101.5768)

Thank you!

I had a similar problem but it disappeared after I changed the projection settings. Go to View > Overall Appearance > Projection > Perspective (near). I hope it will fix your issues with selecting atoms as well.

I just tried changing the projection perspective to near and it did not fix the issue.

Thanks for the idea though.

I tried the perspective fix, but unfortunately, I am still unable to select atoms or polyhedra.

Thank you Edyta for the suggestion. It did not fix my selection issue, though. I think it is dependent on the graphic card and its software. My older laptop with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 630 has no issues with VESTA.

Hello guys,
Maybe you need to check if the '' libs '' on this post are already installed on your laptop. Follow the link :

All guys, Im using thinkbook16 in the same problem, but I just deal with that.

I think that must be a graphic card problem, so I use control panel to change the working status of VESTA, just use the high performance graphic card to run it.

Now I can select the atoms, hope it works in your laptops.

Hey y'all,
I am trying to measure between atoms, but I don't get a line to calculate the distance.
Before that I tried to install different versions of Vesta. If I install a version higher than 2013, the program does not start at all (but gives a window and exits).
Characteristics of my laptop Lenovo Y70-70 touch :
i7 4710HQ.
GTX860M 4Gb

It definitely seems like a problem with certain graphics cards, regardless of whether or not the drivers are updated. Is there any way to fix this issue on the Windows version of VESTA without having to get a new PC?

Someone may find this interesting because of some issues encountered with OpenGL libraries and others related to this topic :

I found this comment on < github > that helped me a lot

>> Begin

I solved this problem by adding the previous lts repository and installing version 4.0.
For this I changed the file sudo vim /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.sources
Add the follow line:
`Types: deb
URIs: http://br.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
Suites: jammy noble-updates noble-backports
Components: main restricted universe multiverse
Signed-By: /usr/share/keyrings/ubuntu-archive-keyring.gpg

Types: deb
URIs: http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
Suites: jammy-security
Components: main restricted universe multiverse
Signed-By: /usr/share/keyrings/ubuntu-archive-keyring.gpg`

then update the repositories with apt update and go to synaptic to search and install the correct version of libwebkit2gtk

<<END

Good luck.

I have been encountering the same problem on my laptop (windows os). The strange thing is that the problem would vanish when I connect my laptop to an external monitor (extended mode) and have vesta opened on that monitor screen.

Tong
