Turning off lighting produces black marks around atoms

As described, when I turn off lighting, these rough black rings appear around atoms. I want the matte appearance when light is off, but not these rings. These do not appear when I change atom type from ball to displacement ellipsoid. They remain for all radii types. See pic below
