Is it possible to automatically synchronize Mendeley desktop every time a new reference is added?Every time I add a new reference using the web plugin, I have to sync again the desktop version, so that the new reference is recognized and can be cited in Word. Is it possible to automate the process?
I have installed Mendeley Desktop ( -mendeley-desktop/ubuntu/instructions/) in my computer. It turns out that I can only run the program through the terminal, by sudo mendeleydesktop . If I try to run it from the dock, or even through the terminal without sudo, it doesn't run. It stars briefly (0.5 sec) but suddenly it closes.
Currently, the only version of the Mendeley reference manager tool that is fully supported for users using campus-licensed MS Word products is Mendeley Desktop. The newest generation of the tool, Mendeley Reference Manager, requires access to Microsoft AppSource, which is currently disabled for UNL users, for its citation plug-in. The UNL Libraries is pursuing options with NU ITS for future solutions. In the meantime, Mendeley Desktop ( -management/mendeley-desktop) remains fully supported by Mendeley and allows for full functionality on UNL-licensed MS Word installations.
Mendeley is a free citation manager available from mendeley.com. Please note that you do not need to choose an institutional login; the software is free and Virginia Tech does not have an institutional license. It exists in both a desktop version and an online version. What makes Mendeley unique is that it's also a social network for academics. In addition, Mendeley suggests new citations to you based on what's in your library already. It also allows you the chance to share your library with others as well as annotate PDFs.

I upgraded my system from fedora 25 to 26 and now mendeley desktop fails to open. I was using the version 1.16 (with latest updates). Even the latest version (1.17.10) does not work. When I run it from the terminal this is the message I'm getting:
The online site has the same information but does not store the full PDFs (it will give you links to find them in the library); the online site also has extensive social networking features that make it easy to find researchers, groups, and papers you might be interested in and add them to your library or your contacts. Both versions of Mendeley automatically sync with each other, so you never have to worry that a paper you added to the desktop version isn't in the web version (or vice versa).
Mendeley offers free basic and premium plans for their web and desktop referemce management program. Mendeley promotes collaboration by enabling the sharing research papers, discovering research data and social networking. More information available here.
