I am trying to figure out how many DOTs use AutoCAD, plain or C3D. It appears that almost all state DOTs are using Microstation to the point I am worried I am getting left behind using C3D exclusively. The problem is that Microstation with all the bells and whistles is very expensive even before talking about training costs and learning curve. I find that my private clients use AutoCAD products, but I am wondering about just the DOTs, federal, state, and local.

Anyway, you should also be more specific to what geographic location you mean. The civil markets are so different that it might not be interesting to get an answer from anywhere in the world, but will be more interesting to get an info about your region.

I live in TN and TDOT uses Microstation for everything. However, a lot of their work is outsourced to private firms and most of them that I know of use Autocad or a form of it for the design, and then convert their ACAD drawings to Microstation format for delivery. I personally do not know of a single civil engineering firm that designs using Microstation, but most of them own a single license of Microstation to make sure when they export their Autocad drawings that TDOT can use it.

To the best of my knowlege the only DOT's standardized on C3D are California (as of late 2011), Alaska (migrated from LDT) and Wisconsin. Florida is using both C3D and Miscrostation based products but I believe they will be phasing out Bentley products as they move forward with C3D.

To date NO DOT has "switched" from a Bentley civil product to AutoDesk and I would take a little better look in TN .. If Im not mistaken Bentley may have more than one user down their... also GEOPAK doesnt run on AutoCAD

I don't think any DOT will be scrapping MicroStation or Bentley's verticals (GEOPAK or InRoads) in one quick swoop. You have to think about current projects in the works. No DOT or consultant is going to switch in the middle of design.

However, since some of the DOT's are making a switch, its only a matter of time before the others follow. I suggest checking out each State DOT Design Specification sites and see what the current standards. Some will accept only DGN, others both DGN and Civil 3D, others may specifically state something like "...new projects to completed and submitted in Civil 3D 201X."

Also, as the industry switches to BIM standards I think you will see more and more DOT's making the jump. Which in turn will open up the talent pool, creating more competition between consultants, making the overall cost of design and construction of a project cheaper.

Also to say "for the past 5 yrs"... this really questions the validity of the statement... WisDOT is attempting to mandate use of Civil3D for their projects simply because NO major infrstructure project has been completed to date using the software (civil3D)... Instead, consultants on these projects use Bentleys Civil solutions because they simply work... on time on schedule. Thats the picture today, remember the state the product (civil 3d) was in 5 yrs ago.

Mike, my biggest problem with Bentley is that it's nearly impossible to get a trial of the product. It makes it extremely hard to see if the Bentley products are worth even exploring. Even including a request in a support email didn't provide any real results in getting a trial. In the past I've you've provided me with a copy of Power Civil, but other then that it's been extremely frustrating getting a copy just to look at.

While not one of my biggest complaints I concur that there seems to be a disconnect with marketing and support. I have requested a demo of InRoads 2 or 3 times over the past year or so with no response whatsoever. Being a Bentley product user we should be able to evaluate our upgrade/crossgrade options.

In my experience, there are more and more DOTs that are allowing C3D stuff, at least to some extent. I work most with Colorado DOT, and more and more of the people I know over there are using C3D, vs. Bentley. As a Civil 3D extension provider (Sincpac-C3D), I also know that there's heavy use in Alaska and Tennessee, in addition to the states that have "officially" or "semi-officially" switched.
