I was very excited to discover an article explaining how I can now use Miracast over a Windows LAN. The technology is called Miracast over Infrastructure. For those unaware, Miracast is the protocol used by the Windows 10 "Project to a second screen" and "Projecting to this PC" functionality.
Only laptops (over wireless, with specific hardware), have had access to this feature up until now which is obviously quite frustrating when this functionality would be very useful over the LAN with regular workstations.
On Windows 10 PCs, the Projecting to this PC feature must be enabled in System Settings, and the device must have a Wi-Fi interface enabled in order to respond to discovery requests that only occur through the Wi-Fi adapter.
I'm assuming Microsoft updated the article, because they now specifically mention Windows PC and Windows Phone alongside the Surface Hub in that article. Just make sure you're running version 1703 (or later) on both ends. As far as your specific scenario of miracasting between 2 "regular" Windows 10 1703 or above workstations is concerned, this portion of the article should help:
A Surface Hub or Windows PC can act as a Miracast over Infrastructure receiver. A Windows PC or phone can act as a Miracast over Infrastructure source. As a Miracast receiver, the Surface Hub or device must be connected to your enterprise network via either Ethernet or a secure Wi-Fi connection (e.g. using either WPA2-PSK or WPA2-Enterprise security). If the Surface Hub or device is connected to an open Wi-Fi connection, Miracast over Infrastructure will disable itself. As a Miracast source, the Windows PC or phone must be connected to the same enterprise network via Ethernet or a secure Wi-Fi connection.
Important thing - name of the target 'remote display' should be resolvable via projector's DNS. Since PC simulenously connected to WiFi and Ethernet will have two IP addresses, client should make sure which IP remote name is actually resolved into. The easiest and most straighforward way to configure this - add entry into C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and then recheck via ping REMOTE_DISPLAY_NAME.
After all, my expectations that projecting via ethernet will be less laggy did not came true. Actually - I did not nothice any improvement. Result is pretty disappointing. Performance is acceptable for no more than text presentations with no animations.
I have ensured that my Windows 10 PC has miracast capabilities and am trying to connect it to my roku. It is showing up in the connect window on my laptop but when I click connect it just says "Connection failed. Try reconnecting in the action center." What do I do?
Here's what happens. Casting (Windows Key + K, then selecting the ROKU device from a list) with Windows 11 begins to work. The TV screen changes to a video connection page, a status bar moves about 1/3 of the way across its path and then freezes. Eventually, the casting status on the PC gives a message stating it could not connect and the TV returns the screen to the ROKU home page.
I am also having the same issue with my new HP laptop and my Roku TV. My old laptop and my phone and tablet still connect just fine, but my laptop has the exact same issue. Has anyone figured this out yet?
I too am having the same issue as donnygreen. It worked beautifully when running Windows 10. Only then it was, project or connect but it worked just great for years. Now since the Windows 11 install it's now called cast and it only loads on my tv screen about a 3rd of the way and that's it! Bummer. Any answers yet?
I use Miracast on a regular basis to connect wireless display to my TV with a Microsoft wireless display adapter. My laptop all of the sudden will no longer let me connect to a wireless display. The button that I used to click disappeared. And it now tells me that my computer does not support wireless display.
This has happened to me before and I was able to fix it by reinstalling the graphics display driver back to the old version. I tried this and it was unsuccessful. I am fairly sure it has something to do with Windows or a driver but I cannot figure it out.
If the issue reoccurs you may want to ensure all software is updated and if that doesn't help, disable all microsoft services using the msconfig to check what's conflicting, hopefully it wouldn't get to it, though (fingers crossed),
that said, usually Microsoft does release a patch of fixes in the next cumulative updates if this has issues, so I suggest you wait for the next set of updates, meanwhile, you could disable updates as a workaround rather than rolling back the drivers each time you install the update:
2. Expand Display adapters. Right click your display adapter and select Update driver. If you can find any Miracast Wireless display adapter here, update it as well.
I had already tried updating the drivers without any success. the wireless display option isn't even there anymore the button has disappeared and the computer tells me that it doesn't have the hardware to support Miracast, Which is not true, it worked fine for the whole first year.
@Wolfbauer20 I suggest you install the latest BIOS and WiFi driver updates using the HP website, and if the issue persists, create a new user account to check if that works, as conflicting software could cause such issues.
the new user was a good idea, but it didnt work. I have tried everything. I have updated every single driver i can find, as well as every windows update. I have ran all scans i can find and still nothing.
I had given up and moved onto other things. I got a notice to update my antivirus, so i opened the program to do it. And it said there was a few apps that were out of date, apps i rarely use. So i updated them. Now miracast came back and works.
So, it has been working for a few days now, and is still technically working right now. However it started doing something all new now. The second display is kinda blurry/pix-elated and sometimes there is an audio delay. I have tried changing the refresh rate in the settings, and the resolution.
I took some photos below to show what it looks like. It doesn't have anything to do with the display adapter as i can connect my phone and tablet with perfect image on the tv. And when i use an HDMI cable from my laptop the image is perfect as well.
I received my Archer T2U Plus today, plugged it in, and downloaded/installed the Win10 driver from the support page, as directed by the instruction booklet. It immediately started working and I was able to connect my PC to my WiFi network. I now had two connections - my preexisting Ethernet connection and my Wifi connection. Excellent!
Then I went to the "Projecting to this PC" Settings page, which was the whole point of getting this product. And, like the last two WiFi adapters I bought, it still says "This device doesn't support receiving Miracast, so you can't project to it wirelessly":
Thank you for your help. I ended up submitting a support request, and am getting help from a senior support engineer. So I'm going to let this thread go silent for a while. However, once the issue gets resolved, I'll post the solution here so that other people with the same problem can see it.
My PC is hardwired and does not natively have wifi so I had the same issue as OP. Once I plugged in the adapter and downloaded the drivers, I was able to easily project to and from this PC. I DID NOT have to connect to wifi to use the miracast feature. I was able to stay hardwired the entire time I was using miracast features. This leads me to conclude that the T2U Nano does support miracast. Hope that helps.
@MandoMK3 It came in yesterday, and I just installed it. NO love. I think the code problem is that there's something deep down in the chipset of the computer's motherboard that doesn't support Miracast. So no matter what WiFi dongle I put on top of it, it just won't work.
I have been having a rather cumbersome and consistent issue when my laptop connects to my Samsung television through the screen sharing feature. It seems that although the laptop does indeed connect to the TV, after a few minutes pass, the television's monitor begins to freeze. Only the television's monitor freezes, my laptop still plays and functions normally. I made sure that the software on my laptop, the drivers on my laptop, and the software on my TV were up to date, which they all were. The laptop is operating on Windows 10. Also, my iPhone doesn't have an issue when it "screen mirrors" with the tv, just this laptop has this issue.
Thanks for responding. The current software version on my television is: T-KTM2AKUC-1294. 1 , BT - S. I noticed that one thread online suggested updating my display adapter drive from the device control manager of my laptop. I updated it which was a "AMD Radeon(TM) Vega 3 Graphics", and restarted my laptop. I attempted to miracast again and watch a video. After about 10 or so minutes the tv froze during its mirroring of the video. However, I reconnected it and it played through the rest of the video and it functioned correctly. I also tried watching a different video from a different source online and it has played correctly for over 25 minutes with no issues of freezing so far. I have also looked up other potential issues that may cause the picture to freeze on the televison and noticed one saying that AVAST Antivirus Software can interfere with miracasting through its firewall. I'll post that link here: -us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance/windows-10-miracast-freezes.... If the issue arises again, I'll see if my AVAST is interfering. I'll definitely keep you posted on how everything goes.
