2_Genie it was meant for the starfighter to use but there was a trapeze rail that was problematic. however the f-102 and f-106 could carry it internally. used to take out a squadron of bombers in one pop. sound safe...

Safer than getting shot to pieces by their tail turrets, for sure. Remember that bombers of the era were hairy targets, and missiles weren't quite there yet. The AIR-2 was a good weapon for what it did, and certainly put a dent in the whole "the bomber will always get through" concept. Its only problem was that it could only be used in a nuclear war, but then, killing nuke armed bombers was the very idea behind it.
