End of Sprint Question

I have just completed a sprint. There are two Backlog Items in the
sprint that are not complete. I appreciate that I should split these
items so that the effort put into them may be recorded. The hook
comes that we have decided to deffer this work while the PO researches
how this items should be implemented (the reason they are not done to
begin with). As a result we do not want to schedule them in the next
sprint. How should I handle this? If I split them they will
automatically be added to the next sprint, wont they? Is there a way
to remove them from that sprint? Is there a way to avoid adding them
to begin with?

When you are on the split screen, after you click "split" you have the option of choosing blank for sprint for the story below (the new, split story). This will just put the story back into the backlog.
