estimate vs planned estimate

When you add a backlog item, the planned estimate defaults to the
estimate that you enter. What is the intent of the 2 fields and how
could they be used?

I am thinking that the "estimate" is used as the "Original estimate"
and the "planned estimate" is updated if the backlog item is going to
take more or less than originally estimated.

I believe you have that backwards. The Planned estimate remains
stable (unless you change it) and the estimate is managed as the
"actual".

This would allow you to report back on the delta between the two and
get a sense of which areas of work are problematic when estimating.
