Merging VersionOne Instances

Hello.
We currently have many VersionOne instances. We have a couple of instances that we would like to bring together into a single instance.
Has anyone ever done this, or have advice on how to best accomplish this? The only current access I have is to the REST api (or via the api libraries) or manual hand entry.
I imagine this will be a horrible mess, and the option is always there to manually migrate some 500+ requests, 500+ defects, and 464+ tasks into a new instance.
Thoughts? Can the database back end (assuming proper physical access to servers) be directly harnessed? Is there some other process for this case?
