I keep hearing about how people are hooked Korean dramas and would like to give them a try, but I have no idea how to choose one. I see that Hulu Plus has a lot. I'm not big on straight romance, but rom-com is fine. I also like police/detective shows or family sagas. Historical fiction is okay, but I was hoping to find something set in modern day S. Korea.
Viki.com and Dramafever.com are where I watch mine. They both have apps for most devices, so I watch them on my Kindle...but you can watch them on a computer as well. I prefer either Viki, Dramafever, or Netflix because I don't have to worry about commercials (I have premium memberships with both Viki and DF.)
If you like police/detective and you want modern S. Korea, you might check out Pride and Prejudice (nothing to do with Austen). It's a crime show about prosecuting attorneys and detectives working cases in S. Korea. There is also some romance between the two main leads, but it's kind of a back story at this point. I'll link you to the first episode on Viki so you can check it out.
Pasta is many people's gateway to Korean drama when it was available on Netflix sometime ago. It's an easy watch about the working of a professional kitchen with a little side of romance. My most recent favorite is Miss Korea, about a girl's quest to become Miss Korea and a CEO of a cosmetic company trying to get out of bankruptcy during the 1997 IMF crises that affected most of Asia. Despite the frivolous sounding title it actually has a lot of heart. And of course you could check out the latest MEGA hit You Who Come from Another Star, but romance is very much the focus of this one.
Boys Over Flowers is a very popular rom com. The actor who starred in it is also in City Hunter which is more of an action series. They are both on Netflix. We have a social group here where talk about our addiction. :)
Healer on Hulu is a great place to start. A lot of people have "Boys over Flowers" as their gateway. But there is more than romance. Hulu is good and so is Netflix but once you get hooked you're going to want to try out Dramafever, Soompi or Viki for more recent shows. By the way Healer is still airing.
I started watching Ghost on Hulu Plus (not sure if it's on hulu-not-plus) and am enjoying it. Some of it seems a bit over-the-top but I wonder if that's due to poor translation. Anyway, I've seen 3 episodes and will keep watching.
Subscription services, like Netflix and Hulu Plus, that provide on-demand streaming videos are increasingly popular, but still many TV consumers are left wondering whether or not to abandon traditional cable.
Netflix is a subscription service that allows viewers to watch movies and shows on TV, laptops or mobile devices. The costs are fairly low: for $8 per month subscribers get access to hundreds of movies and programs.
For those not satisfied with Netflix, Hulu Plus is another option. Hulu Plus is a subscription service that started more recently. Its content differs from Netflix; it has different shows and movies. Those who missed an episode of their favorite show can go to the Hulu website and watch it for free. Access to a plethora of shows, movies and TV series costs $8 per month, but in contrast with Netflix, Hulu Plus is ad-supported, which annoys many subscribers. An advantage of Hulu Plus is that it adds new episodes almost a day after they were aired on TV.
According to huluvsnetflix.org, a website that analyzes both Netflix and Hulu Plus, Hulu Plus can be a better answer for those who prefer TV programs, since it has the current seasons, while Netflix usually has past seasons but has a larger movie database.
