The group was founded as Hafez Ensemble in 2005 by Sa'id Jafarzādeh Homāy[1] (سعيد جعفرزاده هماي), also known as Parvāz Homāy (پرواز همای) and Homāy Foomani.[2] The group's performance follows a Persian tradition of music making known as Chāmeh Sarā'i[3] (چامه سرایی) according to which one person is in charge of writing the poems, composing the musics, arranging the instruments as well as singing the songs. The instruments employed by this Ensemble include Daf, Dayereh, Kamāncheh, Lute, Reed, Robab, Santour, Tār and Tonbak. The Mastān Ensemble derive their inspirations from such Sufi poets as Farid ad-Din Attar, Hafez and Rumi. The performances of this Ensemble are emotionally intense and the thoughts and meanings conveyed by their musics and songs are both philosophical and contemplative.Mastan played their debut U.S. performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2008.[4] beside United States they also toured in Europe and Canada.[5]
Mastan are not allowed to release their works in Iran.[5]

Kunangudi Mastan Sahib, who was given that name owing to his ever being steeped in spiritual bliss, is believed to have lived between 1792 and 1838. Born at Kunangudi near Thondi in Ramanathapuram district, he was named Sultan Abdul Qadir at birth. His parents, Nainar Mohammed and Fathima Bibi were wealthy but the son chose to give it all up, seeking the supreme truth. He became a Sufi, taking to the Qadariya order. His love for God he expressed in the form of songs. To him, God was the beloved and in some of the songs, in keeping with the Sufi tradition, he depicts the supreme being as feminine.
