Coming back to Madison from Verona last week, I sat at last light
before going under the bridge for 2 green-yellow-red cycles before
managing to get through the intersection -- at 2:30 in the afternoon!
Hardly "rush hour." While waiting, I counted 10 semi-trailers exiting
the westbound beltline heading onto 151. Another 8 went through (one
clearly running a red light to do so) during the next green light. As
these trucks came off the ramp, slowed or stopped to turn the corner,
they belched a lot of exhaust -- black and visible -- and the roar as
they accelerated again was audible through the closed windows of my
car.
I can't help but wonder if this project will ultimately reduce traffic
noise and emissions to some extent, since vehicles will not have to
downshift or come to a complete stop at the intersections as they do
now? While I would love to see all that truck traffic bypass this area
completely, I fear that it's too late for that option.
