As an alternative to expanding US 151/Verona Road and US 12/14, the
Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) evaluated a South
Reliever roadway in the south portion of the Madison metropolitan
area, which was investigated in response to public input.

WisDOT has another corridor study for US 51. I thought this
information might be useful as part of a wider South Reliever
discussion.

US 51 corridor, south segment - Stoughton to McFarland
http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/projects/d1/us51study/index.htm

The US 51 south segment extends 18.4 miles from I-39/90 east of the
city of Stoughton to US 12/18 (Madison South Beltline).

This portion of US 51 in Dane County has three major components:

* Needs Assessment
Completed in February 2004, the in-depth needs assessment study
reviewed and analyzed transportation needs along US 51 from Burma Road
in the village of McFarland to the east side of the city of Stoughton.
An analysis of operating conditions from Stoughton to I-39/90 was also
completed.
* Short-term improvements
Some of the issues identified in the needs assessment can
potentially be addressed with short-term improvements in the corridor.
A Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) corridor management
team is working to identify and implement improvements on an ongoing
basis.
* Alternatives analysis
Based on the findings of the needs assessment, WisDOT has
decided to proceed with an alternatives analysis that will identify
and evaluate potential corridor improvements. This analysis will
involve development of long-term solutions to address the problems
identified in the needs assessment (NA) and completion of an
Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

Traffic on Verona Road (south of Raymond Rd) has been increasing at
50-80% per decade since 1970 according to Madison Transportation
Planning Board (MPO).

http://www.madisonareampo.org/trends/roadways.cfm

Yet, WISDOT only projects a traffic increase of 10% in traffic between
2001 and 2020 (less than 5% per decade). Why this projected slow
traffic growth. Could it be that projecting growth similar to
historical growth would expose the problem with delivering more
traffic to a Beltline highway already operating at capacity (according
to DOT)?

http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/projects/d1/verona/docs/southreliever.pdf

Even more interesting is that WISDOT lists the traffic volume south of
Raymond Road in 2001 at 39600 and MPO lists the traffic at 52,000.
Were these separate studies? Different measures? Need to get
clarification from MPO or DOT.
