I see the mic offers gps, but I couldn't see anywhere what level of APRS functionality it supports. Is that known? Or provided anywhere?

The setup of your call and APRS number will be in the app and that stays in the radio… it’s the position the radio gets from the GPS in the new microphone.

It used to require the App to be running and if that stopped the radio would keep beaconing but the position would not change, so it looks like you now have the information in the microphone screen.

If it is similar to how the previous BHM-78 works, nothing really with regard to APRS.

I haven't updated mine and don't even know if there is an update, or how it would get updated, but I don't remember seeing anything APRS specific on the BHM-78.

The BHM-78 doesn’t seem to be available and sites saying discontinued … it’s the replacement for it. It had its own GPS with in the unit and you didn’t need to run the app.

Let us know what you think. I'm curious about the range for one. Oh, and battery life. Hoping it's a winner.

The range will be limited by the Super Bluetooth antenna of the VERO itself.. that is not that great !

Of you guys are into hardware modifications Im pretty sure you can attach a better Bluetooth antenna, we've experimented with similar stuff in the shop for curiosity sake.

I received it last week... First thing to do (i contact vero support for this)
  1. Sync it with the radio, not the application!
NOW.. bluetooth range... Way more than the other bluetooth handlet i had purchased. I was unable to go more than 20ft (if not less). Now im at the opposite of my house, and still working. No drop on the audio.

Thanks for the update Erik! Glad to hear the range is decent. Do you like the sound quality and mic sensitivity? How is the battery life? Thanks for seeking this out and providing the info!

I have been following this thread and thought you may like my comments.

I have had my BHM-88 speaker mike for about a month now, and I love it. Here is why.

I originally bought the radio for its Bluetooth capability, as I didn’t want to run a lot of cables from the back of my wife’s car to the front. The idea of a simple radio-only setup in the trunk area was my thought. Using the original Bluetooth Mike, the HM-75, was not as easy as I had hoped, as there was no clear indication of what channel I was on, and the voice feedback was all Chinese. I never found out if I could change it to English.

Because of this, I installed a small Android tablet, and this worked reasonably well.

The real annoyance was the time it took to start the tablet and then start the app, etc.
With my other radios, I was accustomed to jumping in the car, turning on the radio, and going. The tablet delayed my start by at least a couple of minutes, which eventually got frustrating enough that I didn’t even use the radio on short trips around town.

This mike has now given me everything that I was initially hoping for in the radio.

I now have the radio hidden away in the kitchen, which is pretty central in my house, and
I use the BHM-88 everywhere in the house. The range doesn’t stretch to the Garage. I suspect it depends on the structure, in the way, such as metal heating ducts, etc.

The menu system is complete, and you can control all the main functions easily.
In my opinion, more simply than the app. The audio is plenty loud enough and easily adjusted. The battery lasts a full day, even with me scanning the local repeaters and using the audio at a reasonable volume. The APRS info screens also tell me what I need to know, and the display is bright and in color. The mike also provides the GPS info to the radio, so the app doesn’t need to be used at all.

The one snag I had to overcome was that when I received the mike, it was 100% Chinese.
I used Google to translate the screen directly and found the language item under Display Settings. After changing, the whole unit is now in English and very straightforward.

So in conclusion, I would give it an enthusiastic two thumbs up!

I’ll try to post some screenshots.

I have to admit after seeing your review I'm a little bit more tempted to get it. One benefit I can see is during 4x4ing, you frequently have to get out of the vehicle and having a portable solution would be advantageous. Typically I carry a second radio, I still will, but grabbing this would make life easier.

Is it possible to edit frequencies directly from the mic? If that was the case I could probably leave the android tablet at home.

Thanks,

Dmitry

I don't have one so can't answer the question of being without the phone as I think you advisable...
BT distance within a vehicle could be an issue as metal panels will the passage of by signal more than walls . So think about distance. Even extending the radio BT antenna could be possible..

Yes you can modify or add new channels including tone, scan and squelch settings easily, directly on the microphone.
