Hi Chris

Thanks for the write up  and pictures but I see no information on improvement over the existing BT, such as distance coverage.

Hey Min,

I have no numbers to show before and after. However, it has increased my range to where I can take my tablet in the house and get undistorted audio. Prior, I could barely get the tablet in the house before the audio was unusable, even if the tablet was placed close to the garage, (radio is in Jeep). There has been a noticeable improvement.

Hi Chris

It seems that Google have reduced the size of messages and documents... Part of cut backs?

Can I use and put your document into files and pass it on to others.. who might be interested in doing something similar.

Min,

Please, most certainly share it.

Hopefully someone can glean some info from it that helps them with the mod.

As soon as I can get details on how to dissasemble the BH-78, I will attempt the same for it as well. I plan on using the same bluetooth antenna kit and replace the false antenna on the handheld with the true antenna.

Chris, Nice work, but there is a problem.  You now have 2 antennas in parallel, this will cause 2 problems.  1) the impedance that the BT transceiver will see is 25 ohms instead of 50 ohms which will increase SWR to 2:1 or higher (most likely either antenna was not exactly 50 ohms)  and due to the length of your coax to the new antenna is many wavelengths long, you now have 2 antennas out of phase.  This will cause weird patterns of cancellation.  Not to worry though, easy fix, take a razer blade and cut the trace to the onboard antenna just after your solder connection.  You can always solder bridge it in the future if you decide to use the onboard antenna.  You should see an even better boost to your range.

Lou,

You are correct. I forgot to add that I interrupted the traced antenna by scraping through with a razor. Make sure you scrape completely through the copper.
