Hi Kent,

do you know if you all have any documented reports of the brown marmorated stinkbug? Apparently it's in VT but we (I'm wearing my USDA PPQ hat now) don't know much about it's distribution. According to Margaret Skinner (at the Ent lab at UVM), the daughter of NH extension entomologist Alan Eaton found one in Bellows Falls.

Have you seen or heard of one in anyone's VT collections? Just thought I'd ask, on the off chance that you might know of a specimen somewhere.

thanks,
Judy Rosovsky

Here is a distribution map for this year:  http://pest.ceris.purdue.edu/map.php?code=IQAQQKA

Emilie Inoue, Emilie...@state.vt.us, would probably have more information.  She is the state Pest Survey Coordinator and may have specimens.

This insect is very easily transported by car.  A visiting entomologist from Pennsylvania, an established BMS area, showed me a pile of dried dead bugs on the dashboard of his car last June.

The only news I've heard so far about the brown marmorated stink bug was from 2010, when Jon Turmel told me that one was found in Stowe, VT.  I haven't heard any reports about this bug in Vermont for 2011.  I agree with Alan that it would be good to check with Emilie (emilie...@state.vt.us) or Jon (jon.t...@state.vt.us) for additional records.

Interestingly, Kyle Lombard in New Hampshire reported the insect in 2010 after conducting a survey of insects that showed up in swimming pool filters.  Since Asian longhorned beetle specimens had been recovered that way in Massachusetts, he decided it might be interesting to put out a call to public swimming pool operators to see if they'd be willing to send him their catches.  He ended up with a series of cooperators that were well-distributed across the state.  Among the many insects collected were specimens of the brown marmorated stink bug. Kyle suggested that a survey of private swimming pools might be a good citizen science-type project.  (Here's Kyle's address, should you care to  contact him:  klom...@dred.state.nh.us.)
