emergence holes

Hi all,

A student and I are interested in doing a small study to document
whether Pileated Woodpecker excavations in trees are correlated to
Tremex horntail and/or Megarhyssa infestation of a tree (i.e. are
woopeckers eating these grubs). Does anyone know how to differentiate
emergence holes of these hymenoptera from emergence holes of wood
boring beetles? Thanks for your thoughts.

The exit holes of wood boring beetles in the family Buprestidae are D shaped. This includes Pine Borers, Bronze Birch Borer and Emerald Ash Borer among others. The exit holes of Tremex are round.
