Greetings, VES Members:

Two Northern Buckeyes (Junonia coenia) were at the northern beach
access to Wrightsville Reservoir in Middlesex this afternoon. We have
only four records of this species during the Vermont Butterfly Survey,
all from the southern part of the state. They've not been documented
this far north, in Washington County. And with the Giant Swallowtails
(Papilio cresphontes) we've been seeing this summer, the Buckeyes
could be part of a trend of "southerners." What's next? Atalopedes
campestris (Sachem)?

Here's a photo of one of the Buckeyes:

If you get over there, look in the mowed field adjacent to the parking
lot.

Best,
Bryan Pfeiffer

This is all very exciting and cool, but it makes me even more concerned about our warming climate.
