In looking at agricultural crates available here, except for the double-height ones that are about 4ft tall, they all seem to be less than 1m^3 (internal).  The highest volume with the most width I find has internal dimensions of 46in x 46in x 25 5/8in (1.17m x 1.17m x 0.65m).  To have 1m between the inlet and outlet (= crate floor?), does that suggest that the inlet should be 14in (0.35m) above the top of the crate?

Hi Burton,
no, not at all. Go for the greatest width rather than height. Calculate the fall for your wastewater plumbing to the inlet of the primary vermifilter. If you have surplus fall, you can always make the roof a little higher from the top of the crate for more capacity, but not essential. The higher the floor of the crate is above ground level the more surge capacity you'll have in your secondary system, so work from the inlet of the primary digester downwards.
Cheers
Dean
