My wife's computer recently stopped displaying Gmail in her Mac Mail App. I updated her system, I deleted her Gmail account (in order to reinstall)...I cleared the cookies, the caches, etc, all to no avail. I tried to use both the Gmail on the pop up screen as well as the Add Account.
When attempting to add, the pop up screen says "Google 400. That's an error. The server cannot process the request because it is malformed. It should not be retried. That's all we know". That message comes from Google not Apple.
I had this exact same problem today (Feb 2024). Unfortunately, my wife tried to manually reset her Gmail account and since then, MacOS (Sonoma) kept redirecting her to a browser to reverify her credentials, which were refused every time with this message mentioned above. Finally, I traced the issue to a Safari security setting.
Me too! Downloading Chrome on my Mac solved the problem!! This time, instead of getting the "404 error page", Chrome opened a new window asking if I was sure I wanted Apple (MacOS) to have access to ... basically everything. Once I "accepted" the options, my gmail account immediately returned (the account I had deleted but couldn't add back in because Google couldn't authenticate the login). Had I found out that adding Chrome to your App. Folder would do the job, I could've saved hours of frustration. Now I have two web browser choices: safari & chrome.
Using a Gmail account that is synced using iCloud syncing. On just one Mac I keep getting asked to add the password, and when I say yes, the Internet accounts pat of System Preferences comes and and then shows me a message
So I add it to Internet Accounts on another machine, and it works. So when the accounts sync back the machine with the problem I get an alert asking me to enter the password, which then gives me the "Connection Insecure..." message. So it's just on this one machine. The account settings are the same, set up from the sync, so I don't have to do anything. Don't know what configurations or proxy settings (which I don't have set) I need to look at.
However, I did notice that everytime I opened mail I was being warned that the GPGMailBundle was not compatible and was being disabled. I deleted the plugin and restarted Mail - And now I can enter my password. ?
Are you using Google's 2 step verifications? Do you have Google's authenticator app for generating unlock codes off your iphone? You can also generate app specific passwords in Google's security settings and use that password instead of your normal password to let your Mac have full gmail access.
I had some problem with 10.11 GM. In my case the certificates were still valid but had a red "x This certificate was signed by an untrusted issuer". Deleting these certs (two in my case) fixed the problem.
Hi all, I just had this problem on a machine with an (almost) clean install of 10.11 on it. I say almost: the only thing I'd installed already was Avast. Turns out their web filtering function was trying to MITM the secure connection to Google and it was failing. Turning off web filtering let me add the Google account successfully.
I use Chrome on my Macbook to send an email through Gmail. While in Gmail, on the top right corner I can see my Google (g+) profile image, but when I hit reply button to reply to an email, then instead of my Google image, it's the default icon that came with my Macbook Admin account (a hawk) being used.
This is really, really annoying and looks totally unprofessional, which makes me wondering about Apple products. I have deleted my Gmail account from the Apple's Mail app and I have also disable it from the Messages app, but still Apple's image persists.

When you add a Gmail account to Mail.app, you can choose to sync contacts with Google. (It might even do it by default. I am not sure because it has been years since I set it up.) If you do so, all of the contacts in Contacts (Address Book) on your Mac will be sent to Google, including the contact that represents you. If you did not set up a specific contact for yourself in Mac Contacts, Apple did so and for that contact, the picture would have been the one used for your Mac user account.
When the contacts synced to Google, the one with your name, email and the hawk picture was sent along with it. Google reads your contacts and displays the icon from your contacts, NOT your Gmail/Google+ profile picture, next to the Reply/Forward box.
To test this, confirm you have a contact in your Gmail account that has your email address in it, and that it has that picture. Delete that contact and the picture next to the Reply/Forward box should return to normal. You can prevent this going forward by changing the picture for your entry in Contacts on your Mac.
You are probably syncing Google contacts to the Contacts app in OS X. If this is the case, you can edit the image by finding your contact card in the Contacts app and clicking the image to choose a new one. This change should then sync to your Google account.
I ultimately fixed this by updating the Mac contact for myself. Because I couldn't simply upload a picture (more detail below), I did this by copying the picture to the \Library\User pictures\Fun folder, then editing the contact in the Contacts app (where my picture was now available to select under "Default").
Firstly, the image does not come from the gmail contact, it comes from the gmail "My picture" setting. If you go into settings in gmail the incorrect picture is shown there as well. It might well originate from the Mac contact, but in gmail it does NOT come from the contact, so updating the contact in gmail will not change it.
Secondly, switching off contact sync to solve this is really not a solution. If you have hundreds of contacts that you would like to keep in sync then it doesn't make sense to switch it off just because Apple has introduced some rogue behaviour that updates a gmail setting from one contact instead of just syncing the contacts like it was supposed to.
Thirdly, when I do go to my own contact in Gmail, the image is not the incorrect Apple one, it's my image that I want to use. So it seems that the contact sync, instead of syncing the contact image to the contact (which would make some sense) actually does not do that and instead it updates the Gmail picture setting. I'm not 100% sure it is the contact sync that's to blame though. From various google forums posts a lot of users reported similar behaviour with chat clients (esp. Pidgin) updating the gmail pic, so I suspect Jabber in my case is to blame and not the contact sync.
To make matters worse the Apple contact picture options are really limited. I.e. I cannot simply upload a photo. It has to come from iCloud, or from Camera, or from Photos. Since I don't use the default Mac photos app and do not store my photos on iCloud I cannot upload the right picture and had to resort to copying the file to the app's library folder as described above.
I have been using Outlook on my Macbook pro with my Gmail account for over a year with no issues. Then suddenly, it stopped syncing. Even when clicking 'sync', it goes through the process with no error messages, but it doesn't actually sync the e-mails. I need to actually quit and restart the app to sync, but it only works the one time at launch. It also won't send an e-mail - they just sit in the outbox, until I quit the app and restart, then they'll send.
I am having the exact same issues. None of the hacks such as resetting the account or reinstalling the gmail account seem to work. Like you, the only solutions I have is to quit Outlook and restart every-time but this is not sustainable. Cannot understand what is going on and have ensured that I have all the latest updates.
