In Sonic Adventure, Dr. Eggman has discovered the mighty monster known as Chaos, whom he plans to use to destroy Station Square and build Eggmanland on its ruins. To prevent their nemesis from achieving this goal, Sonic and Tails embark on an adventure to secure the seven Chaos Emeralds. Along the way, their old friends Knuckles and Amy, as well as E-102 Gamma, a robot created by the doctor, and Big the Cat, who has lost his friend Froggy, get involved in the skirmish as well and learn of Chaos' past through mysterious visions.

Having take up residence in Station Square, Amy Rose is bringing groceries home as she thinks back on how bored she is of her mundane life in the city and misses the old days where she would go on adventures with Sonic and facing different bad guys. However, with her friend now gone, all she can do is shop until she drops. Suddenly, however, she sees to her shock that the city is shadowed by Dr. Eggman's Egg Carrier. As the pink hedgehog suspects that the doctor is back, she is hit in her head by a small bird falling down from the giant vessel. Just as Amy takes notice of the bird, she spots E-100 ZERO, one of the villain's robots, land nearby. After picking the bird up, the pink hedgehog notices that the robot is chasing her and runs away with the bird in her hands. Fortunately, she manages to lose the machine by hiding in the nearby Burger Shop. After her new foe has left, she deduces that this "Birdie" has escaped from Eggman, who is now hunting him. Amy thus promises to protect Birdie and stay by his side by all costs.

As all hope seems lost, the hedgehog is approached by Tikal, who explains that her heart has always been with the Master Emerald as well as Chaos', but he is filled with rage and anguish, stating that if it goes on, he will destroy the world like he did centuries ago. Chaos absorbs the Chaos Emeralds' power and scatters them across the city, and Tikal insists that Perfect Chaos has to be sealed inside of the Master Emerald again. Sonic, however, disagrees, stating that this solution will not change how Chaos feels inside; instead, his heart will remain in turmoil and his rage will persist, leaving the creature trapped forever. Tikal then asks what choice do they all have. Soon after, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, the pink bird that had been powering E-102 Gamma and Big approach him and give him the unpowered Chaos Emeralds. The fox explains that Perfect Chaos only used the negative power of the gems, and that the hedgehog can harness their "real" power, to which Knuckles reluctantly agrees with. The citizens of Station Square cheer Sonic's name as Tails explains that negative forces are not the only way to empower the Chaos Emeralds, that their positive feelings toward others can make them work, and that their hearts together form awesome powers. Sonic thus uses this power to transform into Super Sonic and engage the beast in a mighty battle. In the end, Chaos is defeated and is reverted to his normal form. Having been neutralized by the positive energy of the Emeralds as Knuckles states he has changed again for the better this time, the creature is approached by several Chao and Tikal, the latter explaining to him that the former have been staying alive for generations and living peacefully with humans. With the fighting now being over and harmony having been restored, the circle of life moves on, and the female echidna thanks Sonic and his friends for their efforts and departs with Chaos into heaven.[10] With this conflict now having come to an end, the hedgehog sees Dr. Eggman flying away in the Eggmobile, and leaves the scene himself in search for more adventures.

A long time friend and admirer of Sonic, Tails devoted himself to tinkering in his workshop while Sonic was away on his journey. Tails' adventure beings one day when, in the midst of performing a flight test with his latest aircraft invention, he suddenly began to experience engine trouble and...[11]

As a launching game for the Dreamcast, Sonic Team needed to show off what the console was capable of doing in an appealing way to the public.[20] In order to achieve a more natural, realistic feel to the exotic levels like ruins and jungles, the core members of the Sonic Team traveled to the Americas in November and December 1997. The team's journey began in the northern part of the peninsula in the Chichen Itza, from there the team traveled southward along the Eastern side of the Peninsula where they also visited Cancun, Tulum and finally Tikal. The team then left the peninsula traveling down through Central America, into South America, Peru, where they visited Cuzco, Machu Picchu and then Ica. The Chichen Itza and Tikal provided the aesthetics concept of the shrine of Knuckles's race, Chaos and the serpents drawing on the walls of the temple;[29][30] Cancun and Tulum provided the concept of Emerald Coast;[31][32] Cuzco provided the Altar of Emerald;[33] Machu Picchu provided the design of Windy Valley;[34] and Ica provided the the aesthetics for Sand Hill.[35] However, the trip was not all fun and games, the team having unexpected encounters with giant spiders, snakes, and Yuji Naka caught a fever at 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Farinheit) before arriving at South America.[25] At the end of it all, the team returned to Japan in one piece, full of enthusiasm to create the game. During the trip, the developers photographed the actual ruins, then processed that data, and used them in-game as textures to create a sense of realism and enliven the feeling of adventure.[36]

Find it in the stations menu on the home screen. This feels like an extension to the 'sonically similar' feature. Choose two songs, it'll create a playlist, bridging the songs together, it's clever and works surprisingly well!

Before Sonic Adventure was brought over to the Dreamcast, the project had started off on the ill-fated Sega Saturn. When it failed to materialize on the failing console, a lot of its work was scrapped so Sega could focus on the Dreamcast. Sonic Jam would become the closest to the Sega Saturn getting a 3D platforming adventure, though it was more of an interactive 3D hub world than an actual game. Both Sonic Jam and Sonic Adventure shared an artist, Satoshi Okano, who later left Sega in 2006. Almost over twenty-five years after the original release of Sonic Adventure, Okano shared some new details regarding a character that went unused during its development.

Meanwhile, Sonic the Hedgehog, once again looking for excitement and adventure, happened to jump right into the heart of Station Square, the next destination on his vacation plan. Excited to see the sights and sounds, the hedgehog stood atop a skyscraper, taking in the city's bright lights and breathtaking visuals. Suddenly, the sound of police sirens filled his ears, looking below seeing the cars the sirens belonged to. Heading off toward the direction of City Hall, Sonic jumped down to the road below, deciding to investigate, always looking to get into trouble. What he found was a police barricade, the officers trying to shoot down a mysterious water creature. Finding their weapons useless, the police retreated, giving Sonic the opportunity to engage the creature. With a smirk and the hope for fun, he jumped in fighting off Chaos 0 in an instant, the creature slipping away down a sewer drain afterwards.

During the course of his adventure, Tails only has access to five Action Stages: Windy Valley, Casinopolis, Ice Cap, Sky Deck and Speed Highway. While Sonic's version of these levels are broken up into two or three distinct parts, Tails' version of the levels are decidedly shorter, often only focusing on one part of the level. The reason for this is, instead of merely emulating the goal of getting to the end of the level, Tails' levels have an added racing element, in which the player must control Tails in a race against Sonic or, in the case of Speed Highway, Dr. Eggman. Only by reaching the end of the level first will allow Tails to win the race and, subsequently, the level. Though the capsule is once again used to signal the end of the stage, there are times when other items are used to alert the player where the finish line is, such as a Chaos Emerald or a missile lodged in a building.

Though he goes through Final Egg, Emerald Coast, Windy Valley, Red Mountain and Hot Shelter, the objectives for the character shift in the middle of his game. Having been created by Dr. Eggman, the robots first moments of consciousness are inside the mad genius' base, seeing the face of his creator. Sent into the training ground of Final Egg, Gamma wants nothing more than to please his creator, being the second in the E-100 series. Thinking nothing of it, he immediately fights with his predecessor, E-101 Beta simply because Eggman asks him to, not thinking beyond what his orders are. It is only after the robot encounters Amy Rose that he begins to question his own programming, and for the final three levels in his adventure he turns against Dr. Eggman, resolving to free the animals trapped within the other members of the E-100 series and declaring Eggman his enemy.

Instead of having Dr. Eggman encounter the player at the end of each level, the boss encounters in Sonic Adventure only happen at specific times, more often than not taking place somewhere on the Adventure Fields of the game. While each character has at least one boss battle, Sonic and Tails are the only two that fight with the doctor himself, both fighting his Egg Hornet early on and then the two getting their own personal final battle with him at the end of their respective adventures. The rest of the boss fights in the game are either robots built by Eggman's hand, or for the first time in a main Sonic title, a being that was not created by the doctor. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Big each have at least one fight with the water god Chaos, the principle three all going up against his Chaos 4 form. Though the same character, each encounter with Chaos offers its own unique challenges and attack patterns, much as each encounter with Eggman over the years has done the same.
