See details below about the OMTRS plan for climbing Sugarloaf Saturday. This is very weather dependent and high winds could be hazardous. The plan now is to camp at Aguirre Springs Friday night so we can start our approach hours before the park gates open at 7. The approach hike is 1.5 hours from the parking lot, climb likely 9 hours with minimal breaks, and 1.5 hours hike out. Extremely beautiful view from the top. We will carry everything with us including approach shoes on the climb so pack efficiently. But bring plenty of water, it will be very sunny on the climb.

Please confirm with me and Chuck if you will be joining us. If the weather (forecast) doesn't cooperate perhaps we can switch to Checkerboard and try the trad (natural protection / no bolt ) route right of the Crosstrainer route. Checkerboard would be alot less commitment, especially if the weather/wind forecast is undesirable.

Thanks,
Zack

Hi all,
We are planning to take a group of 2 Venture crew scouts and 3 adult leaders (Zack L. is one of the leaders) up the never ending slabs of the Sugar Loaf this Saturday. The plan is to camp at Aguirre Springs Friday night. Hike up as early as we can Saturday morning to start climbing as early as possible. So far myself, Erik L., Joy D., and David P. have indicated that they are willing to be roped into this adventure. It is 14 pitches of 5.7 slab with a significant approach and descent with some first time multi-pitch trad climbers. We expect that it will take all day and perhaps then some so headlamps will be mandatory. Also lots of water. It is also a super cool climb with amazing views. I'm excited to do it in the daytime for the 1st time.
If you feel like you are up to the challenge you are welcome to join us but you need to let me know soon (575)-993-6675. It would be especially great to have a few more folks who feel comfortable leading the slab pitches.
Cheers,
Bob A.
