As a hostess, I know how discouraging it can be to pick up after a party is over. If guests would just pick up their cups, glasses, dishes, napkins, etc it would be so much easier for the hostess. As a perfect guest, you can do this! As you put your dishes in or near the sink you can pick up your things and any things you find around you!
This posting is excellent and a much needed reminder these days. It is one thing to be a gracious host or hostess, but another to be a gracious guest! We may love all our guests equally, but having guests with manners, that is amazing! Thanks for the excellent reminders and helpful hints.
Great tips, and just in time for party season. I would like to add that if you do bring a dish to share, please bring anything needed to serve it, or take care of last minute preparations for your dish yourself. I have had guests drop a dish on my counter, along with additional ingredients that needed to be added, or no serving bowl, etc. If I am hosting I am usually pretty busy putting everything together to have to suddenly finish prepping another dish or drop everything to search for a serving tray or bowl. The intent is to help your hostess, not make more work for her.
Next time when guests arrive ask them to place their phones in a basket for the evening. Your event will be more fun for everyone. Believe me this will work. But you will have to do it every time they come.
GREAT advice, Yvonne! Believe it or not this weekend will be the SEVENTH week in a row I have had guests. I have been insanely busy! Then I get a weekend off, then host Thanksgiving, then delve into the holidays. Whew. I must have a death wish!
I loved these tips for being a good guest. I always try to do be the best guest I can, but these are good reminders, and I could even bring my guest etiquette up a notch! Thanks for the gift ideas too.
I love having friends and family stay over at my house. One of the biggest items on our list of new house must haves was a space for guests. So I am so excited to have partnered with Parachute to help set up the perfect guest bathroom in my home.
A few of my favorite extras include a plush robe for them to use, slippers to keep their feet warm, and a gently scented candle that they can light to relax (or cover up odors!). All it takes is adding a few luxe items like these to make your guests feel pampered.
Good recommendations! Missed one though, a toilet plunger!!!! Keeps guests from being mortified about a toilet that refuses to flush. And it keeps the toilet from overflowing while looking for said plunger.
Wow, what a gorgeous guest room! My girlfriend and I have a very similar color scheme going on in our room and we put all of our bedside lip balms in Infinity Jars, they really pop and have a nice high quality feel to them.
Difficult guests are the ones that take up your time in a negative way, are unappreciative or just plain unfriendly. Usually this group does something during their stay that surprisingly puts them into the great or perfect category.
The difference between a perfect and a casual guest is, the perfect guest has studied the offer, communicated clear and conscious and thus is aware of the difference between a hotel suite and a house for example.
Love love love this bath and planning to use as inspo on our guest bath renovation next month. Would you mind sharing where you had your mirror cut? I live in the LA area so would love the $150 option ?
2. Provide an empty closet or dresser. Very few people like living out of a suitcase, where all their belongings descend into a wrinkly chaos. Most house guests GREATLY appreciate being able to unpack their items into an empty space, so clear out the guest room closet or provide a chest of drawers for use.
12. Along with clean bedding, provide fresh towels. Fold them neatly and place them where the guest can see them. Make sure the guests know the towels are for their use. Too many times people assume their hanging towels will be used by guests, only to find that they were mistaken as decorative towels. Provide clean hand towels and washcloths as well. After a long trip, nothing is as welcome a sight as a pile of soft, fluffy towels waiting to be put to use after a refreshing shower.
14. Keep extra blankets on hand. Some people get hot easily, some people get cold easily. Provide extra blankets for those who need to layer up to stay warm. One of the most comforting experiences is a soft blanket to wrap around oneself, so make it convenient for your guests to do so if they wish.
We hope these tips will help you create a space that you can be proud to offer your guests, knowing that when they open the door to their temporary living space they can breath a sigh of relief and completely relax.
Considering the room has no wardrobe or closet, I knew I needed something that guests could hang clothing on so I purchased a little hanging clothes rack from Argos for a mere 40 and few pretty gold hangers for a fiver from B&M Bargains. The super simple rack comes with two small shelves and four hooks for guests to place shoes or other essentials during their stay. I left it in its natural bamboo colour for the time being but in the future, I may consider painting it!
Walmart has a ton of great linens and throw pillows to fit any design trend. I found so many great textured pillows and earthy comforter sets to create a calming atmosphere. You can recreate our guest house with a few favorites below.
We also like having books that are native to the desert displayed, along with some of our favorite interior books. It feels special to share a bit more about Arizona with our guests and the imagery is always beautiful. Walmart has a large selection of books and fun accents to give your home some personality. Having a little fan nearby always ensures our guests stay comfortable and cool, and I love this vintage inspired one we found on their site. More below.
I love preparing for guests to stay over. In our guest room I keep my old vintage typewriter so I type out a welcome message on old brown paper and leave it in the typewriter itself so they can add to it if they wish. Usually our friends leave funny replies and cute comments which (like a weird B&B wanna be owner!) I then keep!
I loved this guest Room closet by Emily Henderson. Not only is there room for her guests to unload their luggage into the drawers and baskets and onto hangers, but she also has used the shelf above for extra blankets and pillows that are easy to find and access.
The lower bins are used as storage for the linens that belong in other rooms of the house, but are clearly labeled which makes them both easy to find, and a quick reference to let guests know that those drawers are currently in use!
I think this is especially important if your guest is going to be sharing the bathroom with other family members or guests. Having the ability to get ready in your own space, and without taking up bathroom time is a win-win.
I teach all about guestrooms and so much more in the 28 hours of course work! If that number sounds intimidating, you can rest easy knowing that the classes (160+) are broken down into easy to digest sections that are on average, just 10 minutes!
When redoing the guest room there was one thing I really wanted to add. A guest basket! I got this idea from a family member, we went to visit them for the Fourth of July and I was so excited to see a basket full of goodies after setting my suitcase down.
Think back to your last trip; was it to visit family or to a nice hotel? Either way, you were probably a little tired when you arrived. At a nice hotel, all the amenities and welcoming items are waiting for you when you arrive and should be since well, you paid for it! Create the feeling of a nice hotel for your guests when they come to visit, they deserve it after all that traveling!
Next is the style of basket. Look at your guest room decor and decide what type of basket would look best. I wanted a minimalist and rustic style so I went with a wire basket to go with the rest of the room. There are so many different styles to choose from, wicker, cloth, plastic, you name it!
The perfect basket has a mixture of everyday amenities and relaxing items that your guests can enjoy while they wind down. Magazines to read, a face mask to relax, etc. Also, putting amenities in the basket that your guest could forget or need more of is so helpful.
It very important you understand how the number of people you invite to your wedding DIRECTLY impacts the amount of money you will spend on your entire wedding. So, after you crunch the guest count numbers and determine a size you financially feel comfortable with, you are ready to move on to step 2.
Tier 2 will include guests you would like to include, if it is financially and logistically feasible, but you will not have a melt-down if they are not invited.
22. A treat (like chocolate or candies) Robert immediately swooped in and stole these chocolates right after I took this picture so maybe wait to put those out until guests arrive. ? Little thief.
So, as a host, how can you make sure that guests feel comfortable spending the night in your guest bedroom? Thinking through these things is especially important if you have people staying with you for longer periods of time.
I have a feeling that the closets of many guest bedrooms end up holding lesser-used clothing like big winter coats and old bridesmaids dresses, or serve as a catch-all for overflowing closets throughout the house.
This is such a simple one to do, but it is so thoughtful! Rather than relying on your guests to ask, or relying on yourself to remember to give them the password, print out the network name and password and frame it.
