OLIVER WANG, BYLINE: When Dusty Springfield flew across the pond in the fall of 1968, Atlantic Records sent her down to American Sound Studios in Memphis, hoping to impart some of that Southern soul magic that had worked so well for Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin. In fact, one of the first songs Springfield recorded there, "Son Of A Preacher Man," had literally been written for Franklin. But when the daughter of a preacher man initially passed on it for being a bit too on the nose, it went to Springfield instead and would become one of the defining songs of her career.

DUSTY SPRINGFIELD: (Singing) Being good isn't always easy, no matter how hard I try. When he started sweet-talking to me, he'd come and tell me everything is all right. He'd kiss and tell me everything is all right. Can I get away again tonight? The only one who could ever reach me was the son of a preacher man. The only boy who could ever teach me was the son of a preacher man.

It's about somebody's first experience with religion and spirituality. Cleverly disguised as a love song.Throughout the song, the narrator becomes closer to God and realizes that He is the only answer in her life. Makes perfect sense, since the "boy" is a "son of a preacher man."

This song is so great! It's just about learning about sexuality for the first time. There's romance, kisses, more than kisses, and surprisingly it's a preacher's son. It's a hot in a weird, remeber being 14 years old way.

Well, I think it's a simple song about falling in love with the preacher's son...and how the "pure of heart" can even be a little "devilish" (stealin kisses from me on the sly), and they fall in love.

Aside from that, I love the rhythm of this song and her voice. I do it for Karoake all the time.

Billy-Ray was a preacher's son
And when his daddy would visit he'd come along
When they gathered round and started talkin'
That's when Billy would take me walkin'
A-through the back yard we'd go walkin'
Then he'd look into my eyes
Lord knows to my surprise

And the only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, oh, yes he was
He was the sweet-talking son of a preacher man
I guessed he was the son of a preacher man
Sweet-lovin' son of a preacher man
Ahh, move me

The song "Son of a Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield is a story of love between a young woman and the son of a preacher. The woman is looking back fondly on the time they shared, when she and the preacher's son would sneak away together and enjoy stolen moments of secrecy and affection. The song is a reminder that love knows no boundaries, including religious ones, and that even someone who follows the rules of society has a right to feel and express love. The song is an ode to the power of love and all it can bring, even in unlikely situations.
