Dear Frankas,
I'm writing on behalf of the Czech group on Velomania. I've seen the
updated program, it sounds great. I have a question though -- what is
the national evening? What should we prepare for that?
Here are some of my other ideas how we could contribute
to the program:
1) Screen the movie Auto*Mat. Auto*Mat is the main Prague organization
for cycling promotion and city livability. But since one of the
founding members is a director and teacher at Film academy of music
arts, it is also a movie, which follows the project from its very
beginning. It's funny and playful, but it's also very interesting as
it tries to go for the deeper reasons behind things. I mean it's a
quality thing, his last movie won several international awards, so
perhaps we could do some public screening, preferably open-air. What
do you think? I could perhaps bring a 12V--220V changer so that we
could power laptop, speakers and the projector from auto-battery.
You would however have to find the projector, speakers and a place.
2) We could make a speech/presentation/workshop on ,,The Prague
experience -- positive promotion of cycling''. We try to support
people to cycle on individual basis, we talk with the media using
playful campaigns, we work in the cycling commision at the city hall.
Some of our small actions had a great and unexpected impact while some
of our big campaigns where we have spent a lot of effort went entirely
void. So I think it's interesting to share the experience and we'd
also of course want to hear from others.
3) Make a collective discussion on how cycling promotion fits into the
bigger picture of quality of city life, transport and social
interactions. In the past tens of years, people used to leave Prague
for the weekend to go to countryside cottages. But now at the
beginning of 21st century we can see a change in how people start to
think more towards their relation towards the place where they live,
towards culture, connections with other people, searching for what is
important, to live slowly rather than fast. So promoting cycling could
be seen as a waste of time in a town as Prague, where entirely new
massive highways are being proposed through the city center --
projects that can potentially have much greater consequences on the
city than cycling. But could it be, that this effort for a different
attitude is being fought on more frontiers than we actually thing and
that with cycling promotion we are an important part in it?
This is for my ideas, let me know what do you think. I'll also
bring some music videos, some PBS documentaries, printed
things and such. We can share them or we can see them or whatever.
If there is anything we can prepare or that we can help with
for the other activities, please let me know.
I plan to finally sort out our transport and tickets this
week and will write you again.
Have a nice day in Vilnius,
Hynek
