I'm trying to add my Gmail account into Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise Outlook version 2104 build 13929.20254 Click-to-run 64 bit. I go to File --> Add Account --> enter my gmail.com address and click connect. Another screen pops up with my email address pre-populated and I click Next, which brings me to this screen:
Couldn't sign you in
This browser or app may not be secure. Learn more

We've modified a lot of Windows Internet Settings, but I can access Gmail through IE and my default Edge Chromium browser. So why doesn't it work when accessed through Outlook? Outlook appears to be using some version of IE instead of my default Edge browser. Does anyone know why that is, or exactly what setting needs to be enabled for this to work?

I was able to go here: and turn on access to less secure apps while I signed in. Once sign in completed and Outlook started populating with data, I closed Outlook, turned off access to less secure apps, and I still had my gmail syncing.

Was getting the same insecure browser error in Outlook 365 when trying to add a Gmail account. What worked for me was to go to this link which alerts your Google account you're about to add a new device or app to it. Once clicking Continue, go to Outlook and try adding the Gmail account again. This should work.

Edit August 2023 -- That link no longer appears to work. This error still occurs in Outlook 365 for Windows sometimes when trying to add a Gmail account, but I think I've finally found a definitive solution -- just keep trying over and over and eventually you'll get to the Google password screen. I find it takes about 4 or 5 tries, but I can repeat this success if I stick with it. Once you get prompted for your Gmail password, you're in the clear. Enter the password associated with the mail account and hit next. If you have TFA enabled you'll need to authorize the sign-in and then allow Outlook access, and that's it.

Actually its an issue inside microsoft edge not in your outlook... First you need to go to your computer Settings > Default Apps > Default Browser and then select Microsoft Edge as your default browser,

if you already have Microsoft Edge as your default browser then you can skip this step... After doing this, now go to Microsoft Edge and Type this text below in the address bar....

welp, the Custom OMA - URI - ./Device/AllowAddingNonMicrosoftAccountsManually solution we found doesn't seem to be working any longer. alexpawlak's solution may be working so far, but I want to test for a day or two to be sure things don't stop working again.

No. This issue is not resolved. We cannot add a Gmail account to any Outlook profile on corporate computers, but we can add the same Gmail account to a non-corporate computer, so we know it's related to the IT settings we set and not the Gmail Account. The problem is still that we don't know exactly what setting is causing this issue, why the setting doesn't prevent Gmail login in the Full IE browser but it prevents it in the mini Outlook Authentication browser, or why Outlook even still seems to use the mini IE browser instead of the Computer's default browser (in my case that's Edge Chromium).

after I read a post about a problem similar to mine (here for example: -insider-program/windows-mail-doesn-t-sync-with-custom... I tried to install other email client app (mozilla's thunderbird, windows mail) with no success. On windows Mail it doesn't work either.

@zfriedman I have had the same problem since update to windows 11 also. Gmail into Outlook 2019 doesnt work whether I use IMAP or POP. The first time it didnt work I thought it may have been my google/gmail password so I changed it and it worked - but only briefly (few days). It no longer works and no amount of changing gmail settings etc in Outlook is fixing the problem. Have you had any luck?

@johnodau I'm having the same issue with Gmail and Outlook 365 on my new PC with Windows 11. Trying to add my gmail account to outlook using the automatic settings doesn't work. I get the following error "Log onto incoming mail server (IMAP): The server refused the connection." and "Send test email message: The server responded: 421 Cannot connect to SMT"

I've tried all the suggested fixes, but to no avail. This is puzzling to me as I would've thought Outlook would be compatible with Gmail. I've spent 3 hours troubleshooting and searching the forums for different solutions.

Do you have comcast cable internet? If so, they (and probably other
ISPs) block your outgoing mail port (typically 25) they recommend you
switch it to 587 but that never works either. The only solution I
have found is to use their SMTP server but that limits your relays per
day. If you have Yahoo DSL (at&t SBC or whoever they are now) you can
request them to unblock it. I beat my head against the wall for hours
on this one until i figured out that they do this. It's wrong.

I have Time Warner and I just finished a Live Chat with Road Runner and they
said I should be able to use Port 25. I have tried changing to 587 and 465 and neither fix works for me. I am at
my wits end!

> I am struggling with this exact same issue but because mine is a trial version I can't get any telephone support from microsoft. I wondered if anyone else had tried that and what had been said.
If you get anywhere I'd be really grateful if you could tell me what the
secret is!

of your symptoms, describe EXACTLY what you're tried, include the EXACT text
of any errors and EXACTLY when they occur. State what you've done in an
effort to troubleshoot,as well.

When you are using a network other than that of your mail service provider,
you must either authenticate to the outgoing server or you must use the SMTP
server of the network to which you're connected. Most mail providers
require that you be using their network in order to use the SMTP server with
no authentication.

I use COX and finally called them. My problem as OUTLOOK kept asking for my
password. He said that passwords can become corrupt. All I had to do was
change my COX e-mail password, then change it in outlook and WA LA!!! I have
mail again!Hope this helps someone because I was at my wits ends searching all over for
something. I told him he should put this on their site because who would have
thought it would be something as simple as this.Have a great day!Susan

It took a couple of goes with hitting send/receive, as it timed out the
first time but the second time i got my test message through and it popped up
in my inbox. I'd advise at least trying 587 and sending/receiving a couple of
times.

On May 30, 2022 Google blocked Outlook from being able to connect to Gmail accounts unless 2FA is enabled. So I have enabled 2FA just now on my gmail account, and my Outlook-connected gmail account still won't connect via Outlook. I'm pretty sure I have to remove my gmail account from outlook and then re-add it, at which time 2FA will kick in. But if I remove my gmail account from Outlook I'm afraid all my emails will be deleted and gone forever.

Note: I have long since had a setting in my gmail account that after a mail client downloads an email it should be deleted from the server. Yes, that is how I want it - I never use the gmail web client, I use Outlook. So all my gmail emails have been downloaded to Outlook (except for the past few days when Outlook can no longer connect to my gmail). So I really don't want to lose those download emails, especially since they've already been deleted from the gmail server.

But there is still a second step. You have to generate a 16-character app password for Mail in your Google account. Go to Gmail -> Google Account -> Security -> Signing in to Google -> App passwords -> select pulldowns, click Generate. REPLACE your gmail password in Outlook with that generated password.

Anyway, I tried to click on "No account? Create one". And the below shows up: "You can't sign up here with a work or school email address. Use a personal email, such as Gmail or Yahoo!, or get a new Outlook email."
