In this issue you will find:
  • The Glimpse of the Peaceable Kingdom deals with a German farm family who adopted a week-old orphaned fawn, and their puppy Lia who appointed herself the baby's foster mother.
  • The Editor's Corner Essay, "Valentine's Day:  The Range of Love," finds encouragement for activists seeking the liberation of animals in a historical sketch of increasing freedom in expressions of love among human beings.
  • One of the NewsNotes tells of an important measure being considered in the New York State legislature to ban the shipment of baby chicks by the US Mail.  If passed into law, it would have an impact beyond the state.
  • Robert Ellwood Reviews Richard Schwartz' strong book Vegan Revolution: Saving Our World, Revitalizing Judaism, which covers  both familiar and unfamiliar ground to animal activists and supporters.
  • This issue's Pioneer is Bronson Alcott, father of novelist Louisa May, a remarkable educator as well as a compassionate vegan long before his time.
  • Our Poetry column includes a short poem by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, which suggests that a bird in flight awakens a memory of a former incarnation, and one by John Hall Wheelock, which tells of the narrator's extraordinary opening of awareness of both the paradisal and the evil dimensions of world history when he hears the song of a wood thrush.
  • The March-April Recipe, Cheeze and Nut Casserole, comes from a vegetarian cookbook entitled A Feast of Friendship, produced in 1987 by Orange Grove Meeting of Friends.
