Dear Animal Kin,
The Glimpse of the Peaceable Kingdom in this issue is an image we have used before, but well worth another look: a remarkable embrace between a seal and a penguin.
The title of the Editor's Corner Guest Essay, "Not One Hoof Left Behind," is a quote attributed to Moses in the Exodus story. It is his response to Pharaoh's proposal that the people of Israel can go out for three days to sacrifice to Yahweh, but their flocks had to be left behind. But the question of where it fits in the Exodus story is not immediately clear.
One of the NewsNotes tells the good news that the Commission of the European Union has decided to end the caging of most agricultural animals after a transition period.
Alice Walker penned one of the Unset Gems, which assures us that animals exist for their own reasons; they were not made for humans any more than Black people were made for Whites. The implications are hard to miss.
This issue's Pioneer is David of Wales, ca 500 - 589 C.E, who was noted for his vegan lifestyle, passed along to his fellow monks. The story of his life is largely legendary, but several references suggest that he was in fact sensitive to the needs of animals.
You have probably not tasted the creamy Green Soup in this issue's Recipe; it was created by Fay Elanor Ellwood, who, by a remarkable coincidence, is my daughter. It is the best soup anyone ever tasted, hands down. That opinion, let me add, is entirely free from maternal bias.
The Poetry selection for this month is the haunting Spiritual "Let My People Go." Also included is a link to bass-baritone singer Paul Robeson, whose wonderful deep tones contributed to making the song famous.
