Dear Peaceable Friends,
  • In our Glimpse of the Peaceable Kingdom we see Bramble the roe deer and Tinsel the turkey, who became inseparable friends from the moment they met at a sanctuary one Christmastide.
  • We humans can choose to Turn from an an empire mindset to one of community, says Judith Carman in the Editor's Corner Guest Review-Essay, presenting David Korten's important book The Great Turning:  From Empire to Earth Community.  But one crucial element is missing from Korten's account, says Carman, without which his vision can never be realized: we must also Turn away from our imperial tyranny over animals, and acknowledge them as members of the great community of earth.
  • One of the Unset Gems, inspired by Will Tuttle, speaks of "the taboo against knowing whom you eat."  Indeed!
  • Will Tuttle will be presenting in several locations in the Los Angeles area early this month.  Check out the details if there's a chance you can attend one or more of them.
  • The brave investigators of SHARK (Showing Animals Respect and Kindness) announce a victory in the group's campaign to close down a fundraising piegeon shoot in Alabama.  See the NewsNote.
  • We don't often think of the hippie movement in the 1960s as having had a pervasive and permanent influence on US-American culture.  But in fact they essentially launched the food revolution in which we are now participating, according to Jonathan Kauffman's book Hippie Food, Reviewed by Robert Ellwood in this issue.
  • The April Pioneer is Lewis Gompertz, 1784-1861, small of stature but a towering giant in the world of animal defenders.  He was co-founder of the RSPCA, a compassionate vegan, and author of an 1824 book that clearly sets forth a position of animal rights. May his memory shine and inspire.
  • Have you ever thought of green beans, vegan parmesan, lemon juice, and sunflower seeds together?  If not, you may be very pleasantly surprised when you try this month's Recipe.
  • The Native American (Ojibway) hero Hiawatha, as set forth in Longfellow's epic poem The Song of Hiawatha, was an animal whisperer.  See the excerpt in our Poetry column.
