Hi -

You know, if you consider yeast to be an animal, wine in general is off your menu....

Otherwise, for the most part you should be ok.

There are a very, very few wines that still use animal products for "fining", which is the process of clarifying cloudy wine by adding protein (which binds to the colloidal materials, and they all fall to the bottom of the barrel). Egg whites, isinglass (from fish) and even dried ox blood (in some parts of the Rhone) have all been used over the years.

Unless you are purchasing one of the few high-end wines that are produced using this practice (I know Ch. Mouton still does egg fining), or have come into possesion of an older bottle, you don't have to worry about it. Just about every winery now, including the largest ones, use bentonite filters (made from clay) rather than organic fining.

Tom :)

Ten years later, this seems false. I'd love it to be true, but….

Any thoughts, fellow vegan oenophiles?

Many wineries I've written to say their wine is NOT vegan. I wish the post was true, but it simply isn't:(

When I went to a wine fest, this was not the case. Very few wines there were vegan and I talked to the owners of the companies.

Che-dog,

I would like to get your sources that say that few wines are fined using animal products.  The information I see shows that this is still a common practice.  These include an article written a few months ago that winemakers have now found a lower cost fish than sturgeon to use in fining wine.  And we see comments from winemakers on the Internet talking about the fining products they use, which include products made from milk, eggs, crustacean shells, and fish bladders.  The list also included silicone oil emulsion.  Articles in magazines and on the Internet, and even the movie "Mondo Vino" talk about the "war" in the wine world about processed versus unprocessed wines.  And we've talked to wine makers about the processes used in the industry.

So, please forward what you are seeing or reading, because we want to remain informed and accurate.      John

Whilst it's true that non-vegan fining agents are still widely used, there are still hundreds of vegan wines available. Barnivore.com is a fantastic reference!

Yeast is not a plant therefore it's animal - a fairly ridiculous argument, apologies Tom. If you consider yeast to be an animal that means, taken to it's logical conclusion, you can't drink wine; eat bread or eat any mushrooms, miso, tempeh or live soya yoghurt.  Clearly, this is daft.  A lot of stuff is vegan, including mushrooms and marmite.

Personally the main issue I have with vegan wine, is the use of sulphites which seems to be spreading.  They are permitted in organic products but, in my opinion at least, are not very good for you.

Sorry for the long answer and semi-rant.

Matt :)

Quite a number of Sainsbury's 'own label' wines are now labelled as being vegetarian AND vegan - and though I'm no expert I find them very palatable, and economical! Ditto Marks & Spencer.
