Sink or Swim"Episode InformationSeason 3Episode 2AirdateSeptember 30, 2019Viewers7.46[1] millionWritten byJuan Carlos CotoDirected byBradley BueckerEpisode ChronologyPreceded by"Kids Today"Followed by"The Searchers""Sink or Swim" is the second episode of the third season of 9-1-1, and the thirtieth episode overall. It aired on September 30, 2019.

On the coastline of Santa Monica, a giant wave towers over the landscape, threatening to destroy it all. Some swim for their lives, others are stranded on the Ferris Wheel at the edge of the pier, whilst the rescue team sets out to save them before they are swallowed by the wave.

Originally known as The Outfit, FuseFX was created in 2006 and since then has become an award-winning studio providing visual effects services for episodic television, feature films, commercials, virtual productions, and VR. With 800+ employees across eight locations, FuseFX is joined by FOLKS VFX and Rising Sun Pictures, and together create epic content like the Tsunami sequence in 9-1-1.

Using a mix of practical effects and sets from the filming location, Tim Cairns, Compositing Supervisor, under the direction of Visual Effects Supervisor Jon Masey at FuseFX, and his team were tasked with integrating CG elements into the scene and ensuring it looked realistic.

The creative process for any episodic content differs depending on the show, but for something like 9-1-1, which airs weekly, Tim and his team must be organized so they can quickly begin tackling their shots.

One of the main benefits of Nuke for FuseFX is its flexibility. The team have created unique workflows using the compositing tool which enables them to work on multiple shots simultaneously, a life-saver in the episodic world of VFX. Tim expands:

The Tsunami sequence proved to be a complicated mix of live-action work and CG. Massive sets were built, from parts of the pier to the submerged Ferris Wheel. Many of the actors were even put in giant water tanks and tossed around to convey the effect of a Tsunami.

To further ensure the integration between the practical and the CG, some of the sets were destroyed by the water tanks to make them look more realistic. This meant that when VFX aspects like debris and CG structures were added, not only did the elements interact with each other, but they also perfectly fit into the live-action footage.

Adding another HPA nomination to its long list of accolades over the years, FuseFX has received back-to-back HPA nominations for their work on 9-1-1. Last season on 9-1-1, the VFX team created a major earthquake that earned them a 2019 HPA nomination in the same category. This season the VFX artists were tasks with building on their previous work as 9-1-1 showrunners wanted to up the adrenaline and excitement for its episode, "Sink or Swim." The episode begins with a major Tsunami hitting the city of Los Angeles, flooding the streets and causing utter chaos.

Jon Massey, the VFX Supervisor on 9-1-1, had this to say, "Thank you Hollywood Professional Association. It is a real honor to be recognized by our peers for the exemplary work done by so many artists and craftspeople on 9-1-1. Every year we push new boundaries that go above and beyond what we think can be accomplished. I am so grateful to our team at FuseFX who really gave their all to make this one of the best episodes of television in 2019."

After the tsunami, Buck gets offered a once in a lifetime opportunity. He hadn't told anyone at the 118, nor his sister, that he finished out some college classes and earned a few degrees. He'd done them on a whim, anyway. Deciding to use his hyperfixations for something constructive at Chris' insistence. Pepa and Abuela offer support since they basically adopted him into their family, regardless of what Eddie was or wasn't doing.

Which is how he ends up going to England for most of a year and following the trail of the legend of King Arthur in search of the origination of the story from oral traditions. With only a few people in on the secret. Granted, he's not sure if Chim will be able to make it very long, but he's happy to give him the chance.

After the wave hits, Buck manages to get Christopher atop the fire engine, but his injuries leave them stranded. Eddie thinks his boys are safe, but is soon to discover the complete opposite. Will he get them to safety before blood-thinner boy bleeds out? And what will he do with all the feelings that arise during the rescue?

After Maisie's SEAL Team finds out what happened to them, over protective brothers come out and demand a visit. The Trip to Chicago to visit her two brothers and surrogate dad goes without a hitch. But what happens when her husband has to return back to Austin for work and she decides to visit her danger magnet brother in LA. Nothing will go wrong... Surely?

The usually bustling second city of Iraq is quiet this evening. Instead of the hum of commerce, the call to prayer, the hushed tones of Arabic, Buck just hears silence. A silence that burns. In the twenty years since the American insurgency, and six years after the Islamic State, the city is still rebuilding - and will continue to do so.

Buck is back at the 118 after the lawsuit but the team haven't moved on leaving him as man behind. One day Eddie gets a call from an unknown number, leading the team to an injured Buck and a lot of guilt.

Sometimes the universe speaks so loudly that you cannot possibly ignore it. Buck wasn't sure he believed in fate until he came to Los Angeles, but sometimes your life falls into place in ways you could never expect or explain.

or the one where complete strangers, Chris and Buck, trauma bond to an unhealthy level after the tsunami, and suddenly a grieving widower has the equivalent of a fallen angel living in his guest room helping him raise his traumatized son.

Buck and Bobby's text messages through the years, from

[Sent 16:37] Hi Evan, please make sure you bring photo ID on Thursday. We will need it to complete those last pieces of onboarding paperwork

to

[Sent 13:17] Yeah well you are my kid.

Eddie couldn't spot Shannon and Chris in the chaos, searching desperately. He did however see a figure in yellow scrubs pushing through the crowd at an alarming speed, heading straight for the fence. He realised what the figure was about to do only a second before they made contact with the fence.

The fence was made with special materials that allowed it to conduct electricity at a rate that was too high for even yellows to handle. This yellow, thought it was worth a shot anyways though. Their hands grabbing onto the fence, and as soon as they did their whole body stiffened head tipping back, eyes wide and blank and mouth open on a scream.

Instead of Buck finding Christopher's glasses after he fell off the truck, Eddie did. Eddie was crushed to think that the two most important people in his world were out there and he had no idea if they were alive. Thankfully they were, but it's high time he make sure Buck knows just how important he is to Eddie.

9-1-1 is a riveting American procedural drama series that delves into the high-pressure experiences of first responders in Los Angeles, but while the police and paramedics are the heart of the show, there's speculation over whether Christopher (Gavin McHugh) dies in 9-1-1. The show premiered on the Fox network in January 2018 and quickly garnered acclaim for its ability to weave heart-pounding action with deep emotional storylines, offering viewers a look into the challenging and heroic world of those who rush toward danger to save lives.

Christopher Diaz, a young boy with cerebral palsy, is one of the show's most beloved characters. He is the son of Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman), a firefighter at Station 118. Christopher's bond with beloved 9-1-1 character Evan "Buck" Buckley (Oliver Stark), another firefighter at the station, is especially noteworthy. Known for his bravery and sometimes reckless behavior, Buck forms a deep and caring bond with Christopher, often stepping in as a surrogate big brother. This relationship is not only a testament to Buck's character growth, but it also adds a layer of emotional depth to the show, highlighting the personal connections that form within the high-stress world of first responders.

One of the best episodes of 9-1-1 is season 3, episode 2, "Sink or Swim", the tsunami episode. This episode puts young Christopher Diaz in the midst of one of the series' most harrowing disasters. During a day at the Santa Monica Pier with Buck, a massive tsunami hits, creating chaos and extreme danger. The intensity of the episode peaks when, amidst the turmoil, Christopher is swept away by the powerful waves, leaving Buck and the audience in a state of shock and fear. Initially, it seems as though the worst has happened and that Christopher died in the 9-1-1 episode.

Buck, in a frantic and desperate search, finds only Christopher's glasses, a moment that is both poignant and terrifying, leading viewers to believe that Christopher might have perished. However, in a twist of events filled with relief and joy in the following episode, "The Searchers," it's revealed that Christopher survived. Chris is found safe but scared, reuniting with Buck in a scene filled with emotional relief and deepened bonds. Ironically, while Christopher is safe, Buck collapses from exhaustion at the sight of his friend.

Christopher's near-death experience in the tsunami episode marks a pivotal moment for Buck's character development in 9-1-1. Buck's journey throughout the series is one of personal growth, evolving from a somewhat immature and reckless young firefighter into a more responsible and emotionally intelligent individual. The tsunami incident, particularly the moment when he fears he has lost Christopher, is a significant emotional turning point for Buck. This experience forces Buck to confront his deepest fears and insecurities, primarily the fear of losing someone he deeply cares about.
