The comics I liked most (relying on my memory) were those drawn by the underrated Leone Frollo: Lucifera, Yra the Vampress and, especially, Biancaneve (a famous Snow White "adaptation" that lasted many years). Frollo could have started a wonderful career in the States, if only he had the chance to work for Warren or Marvel (he was inspired by J. Buscema in the Seventies).
Here is a summarized, mnemonic list of "worthy" comics :
"Biancaneve" (Edifumetto) = "Snow white" [Fantasy. Gory but somewhat hilarious]
"Sexy favole" (Edifumetto): Adaptations of classic fairy tales.
"Oltretomba" = "Beyond the grave": Horror [not so "hard" and well conceived , almost like a Warren magazine. Almost.] This was published by Ediperiodici, founded by Barbieri and Giorgio Cavedon, then acquired by Cavedon. Barbieri then founded Edifumetto and the two became harsh competitors.
"Lando" (Edifumetto): comedic - satiric. The spicy adventures of a guy who's got ... huh ... three balls, that's it.
"Belzeba" (Edifumetto): the story of an hermaphrodite demon from hell.
"Pig" (Ediperiodici, 1984): comedy-horror, the adventures of a "were-pig", a pig headed guy who has to have sex on a regular basis, else he will turn into a regular pig.
"Zora la vampira" (Edifumetto): horror. The adventures of a lesbian vampiress.
"Il Tromba" (Edifumetto): Comedy. The sex adventures of a smart soldier (you say "private"?). Sort of an hardcore Beetle Bailey.
"Il camionista" (Edifumetto): satiric, the story of a truck driver with the face of popular actor Lando Buzzanca...
And many, many, many more. Those comics sold like bread until the nineties.
They are not be confused with the "Fumetti neri" (Diabolik, Kriminal, Satanik, etc.) that predated them and are more similar to the italian Giallo movie.
