Fantastic blog, I just found it the other day. Forgive me if you have addressed this issue yet but how would this model change if say a student were also working six days a week (about 45 hours) on top of full time classes like me? So far this semester I am staying on top of it but I could use some specific advice for my situation if you are willing to offer it. I think your blog is aimed at university students but I believe that many college students who go to community colleges like me have full time jobs, families, etc. Do you have any previously written articles on this and if not would you be willing to consider writing one for us. Loved this post! Currently, I am a freshman undergraduate and it was very difficult to adapt to the college study habits that I needed to succeed. Throughout high school I never needed to study, and maintained a 4.0. But in college I am maintaining straight Cs. Hopefully this post will help me in my next semester. Thanks a lot!!

Hi, I am in the BSN program at VCU, and was wondering if it was smart to go straight into becoming a family nurse practitioner without getting experience. I can go into any NP Program I want because I am an honors student. Would I get payed a lower wage if I didn't have experience before I got my NP? Do family nurse practitioners get payed less in the office versus the hospital? I would prefer to work in a office. I also have a medical assistant certification through a program offered at my high school, unfortunately due to the extra course work from being an honors student I haven't had time to work part-time in college. I'll be honest and possibly unpopular and say I'm distressed at the apparent trend of NP schools accepting students without prior RN experience. Not everyone needs well over a decade like I had but there is a lot to be said for earning some real-world nursing experience that's not found in a book or a practice guideline.
A lot of MSN students also work part-time or per-diem while going to school. Or maybe you can work close to full-time and go to school part-time? I think it's important to have at least some experience.

I read these rules with some worry because I think there may be students who will take these advice at face value and go away believing that it is a one-size fit all winning formula. It may work for O levels, A levels, but one day when they hit that brick wall that cannot be overcome using this strategy, they do not know how to overcome it as they have never gone through the process of figuring it out for themselves. My own younger sibling is an example of this. Self-awareness, which I think you are abundantly equipped with but probably missed out in your process of writing the rules, would more likely provide for long-term sustainable success.
