Thanks to everyone for your prompt responses. I will try and clarify my original question.
1. to Thomas Cornelius: I have used both Word and VDE. Before I retired my employers didn't like non-approved programs being used on work machines. Now it is a question of what I can get working.
2a. to Mark P. Fishman Yes, too many pronouns ("it"), not enough antecedents.Sorry about that. I was trying to keep it simple, before Windows crashed (3 times) .I believe originally had 64 bit windows installed. Now I am not sure. Windows' settings says I am running Windows 10 home on a 64 bit operating system x64 processor.
If you are using 32-bit Windows, then you can run 16-bit software. If you are using 64-bit Windows, then you can't run 16-bit software, unless you run it in a DOS emulation2b. I originally had
an older version of vDOSplus installed. It just worked till Windows crashed for the 3rd time.
3.
Eric Meyer. The challenge with the software that you write is that it just works. My memory is such that I forget what I did to get it working. What version of VDE.TXT do you recomend? (I have documentation files all the way back to the previous century.)
Again thanks to everyone for your help and advice. I need to try out your various suggestions before I write again.
As I recall there was originally a 32-bit version of Windows 10 that still
supported 16-bit software through VDM, but it sounds like you now have a
recent 64-bit version (of 10 or 11) that does not. This means you need a
third-party DOS emulator like DOSbox or vDOSplus, which actually work fairly
well with a few limitations. See the discussion of "DOS EMULATORS" in
VDE.TXT, and feel free to ask any further questions. My own choice was the
2015 version of vDOSplus, for the best overall behavior when running VDE itself.
