Caps Lock has been a mixed blessing on PC keyboards since the MSDOS
days, and there have been an assortment of offerings to either disable
it entirely or change it's function to something else. (Eric wrote one
to make it act as a Ctrl key.)
I just encountered something that might be very handy on Windows
systems, a freeware app called SmartCapsLock. (See
http://www.door2windows.com/smartcapslock/)
When run, SmartCapsLock installs as a resident extension.
Accidentally hit Caps Lock and then realize you've just typed stuff IN
ALL CAPS? Tap Caps Lock again to undo it. It does other things too.
Caps Lock alone is a toggle and runs the Reverse Case function.
Coupled with the Shift, Ctrl, and Windows keys, tt can do other case
related operations, and which does what are configurable.
I've just started playing with it, and it looks promising.
(It requires Win Vista or better, and .NET framework 4, but that
shouldn't be a problems for most folks.)
